Nashik Police Crack Down on Extortion Ring Targeting Senior Citizen

In a significant development, the Nashik police have apprehended four men on charges of attempting to extort a substantial sum of money from a 63-year-old man. The arrest, which took place on Friday, followed a meticulously planned operation that exposed the accused's scheme to leverage stolen digital media for financial gain.

Details of the Extortion Plot

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Kishor Kale, the incident unfolded when one of the accused, who had been employed at the complainant's office for approximately eight to nine years, allegedly stole a computer hard disk. This hard disk contained multiple objectionable videos and photographs, which the suspects discovered upon accessing its contents.

The police reported that the accused then demanded Rs 12 lakh from the elderly victim in exchange for returning the compromised hard disk. Faced with this threat, the victim promptly approached the authorities, setting the stage for a swift police response.

The police have identified the arrested individuals as Akash Bakre (28), Prakash Panpatil (25), Suraj Gavai (27), and Shripat Shinde, all residents of Satpur and nearby localities in Nashik.

During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered crucial evidence, including the stolen hard disk, two pen drives, and a cellphone from the accused. These items are expected to play a pivotal role in the ongoing investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

Legal Actions and Charges

The accused were produced before a local court, which remanded them to five days of police custody to facilitate further interrogation and evidence collection. A formal case has been registered at the Satpur police station under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
