Four Men Arrested for Brutal Killing of Elderly Man Suspected of Witchcraft in Odisha Village

In a shocking incident that highlights the persistence of superstitious beliefs, four men have been arrested for allegedly murdering an elderly man on suspicion of practicing sorcery in a remote Odisha village. The tragic event unfolded in Kendakhal village under the Sadar police station limits of Sundargarh district.

Details of the Fatal Attack

The deceased has been identified as Mahadev Pradhan (65), a resident of Sanpatrapali in Kendakhol village. According to police reports, the four accused individuals forcibly entered the home of Mahadev and his wife Urmila Pradhan (61) around 7:30 PM on Monday evening.

The case came to light when Jayanti Bag, the daughter of the deceased couple, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Sadar police station. Law enforcement authorities swiftly responded to the complaint and launched an investigation into the horrific crime.

Police have identified and arrested four individuals in connection with the murder: Kumod Bag (37), Laba Kujur (22), Siba Pradhan (40), and Pramod Bag (35). All four suspects are residents of the same Kendakhal village where the attack occurred.

Broader Context of Superstition-Related Violence

This tragic incident underscores the persistent challenge of superstition and witchcraft-related violence in certain rural areas of India. Despite legal provisions and awareness campaigns, such attacks continue to occur, often targeting vulnerable elderly individuals.

The Sundargarh district of Odisha, where this incident took place, has witnessed similar cases in the past, highlighting the need for continued education and law enforcement efforts to combat such harmful traditional practices.

Police authorities have emphasized that vigorous investigation is underway and appropriate legal action will be taken against all those involved in this heinous crime. The case serves as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences that can result from unfounded superstitious beliefs.
