Kochi: Drunk Rider Hits Police Officer on Patrol, Police Deny Neglect Claims
Drunk biker injures Kochi police officer, police refute allegations

In a serious late-night incident in Kochi, a police officer on patrol duty sustained multiple fractures after being hit by a motorcycle allegedly driven by an intoxicated rider. The city police have issued a detailed statement to address allegations that the injured youths were denied immediate medical assistance.

The Incident: A High-Speed Collision

The event unfolded in the early hours of Friday, around 1:50 AM, near Malikaparambu in Chellanam. According to the police statement, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Biju Mon and Civil Police Officer (CPO) Biju Mon were conducting a routine vehicle check. A motorcycle, ridden at excessive speed by a man identified as Anil, ignored the stop signal given by ASI Biju Mon and crashed directly into CPO Biju Mon.

Anil was under the influence of alcohol, and his friend Rahul was riding pillion. The impact was severe, causing all three individuals—the CPO and the two men on the bike—to fall onto the road. The force of the collision left CPO Biju Mon bleeding from his mouth and nose, and he lost consciousness.

Police Statement Counters Allegations

The police released their statement on Saturday in response to claims from the youths involved that the policemen refused to take them to the hospital. The official version states that after the crash, the injured CPO was assisted by another passing motorcyclist and Rahul, the pillion rider.

They helped place the officer into a police jeep. The police assert that Anil and Rahul were asked to get into the same jeep to be taken for medical treatment but they refused, stating they would make their own way to the hospital. Subsequently, ASI Biju Mon took his severely injured colleague to Chellanam Cortina Hospital for initial care.

Severe Injuries and Contradictory Stories

The injuries sustained by CPO Biju Mon were significant. He was later admitted to Ernakulam Medical Trust Hospital for specialized treatment. His injuries include:

  • A fracture below his left knee.
  • A fracture in his left wrist.
  • A cut on the back of his head.
  • A fracture in his nose.

Meanwhile, Anil and Rahul sought treatment at the Chettikad Rural Health Training Centre in Alappuzha. Initially, they told doctors they fell after losing balance to avoid a dog. However, medical examination revealed Anil was drunk at the time. The police have released a copy of the accident register from the health centre as proof of his inebriated state.

The incident, originating from the Kannamaly police station's jurisdiction, highlights the dangers police face on night patrol and the serious consequences of drunk driving. The police statement aims to clarify the sequence of events and counter the narrative of neglect, emphasizing that assistance was offered to all parties involved at the scene.
