Digital Trail Leads to Capture of LeT Operative Shabbir Ahmed Lone

How Digital Footprints Unmasked a Lashkar-e-Taiba Operative's Network

Shabbir Ahmed Lone operated with ghost-like stealth, yet his digital trail proved impossible to erase. The conspiracy's heartbeat pulsed through the blue interface of Telegram, where Lone maintained clandestine communications with shadows from his past: Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) handlers Asif Dar and Sumama Babar.

The Encrypted Communication Web

Once a resident of Sopore and now operating from safe harbors in Pakistan, Dar manipulated operations from behind the handle @YD_1*7. Lone, demonstrating operational caution, changed encrypted chat handles frequently but recently used mobile number +8801925853*** to communicate not only with Dar and Babar but also with his module members. This digital oversight ultimately became his undoing.

In February, authorities arrested members of his terrorist module, and Lone's confidante, Umar Faruq, provided a treasure trove of intelligence. This included chat IDs and the critical mobile number, enabling agencies to perform a "digital handshake" that linked login timestamps directly to Lone's physical movements.

The Virtual Pincer Movement

Investigators executed a pincer movement in virtual space, where every encrypted message sent by Faruq was shadowed by corresponding data packet surges that betrayed Lone's coordinates. As the digital net tightened, the operational distance between the terrorist and security agencies evaporated, eventually allowing deployment of a HUMINT (Human Intelligence) net into which the operative walked directly.

From Madrasa to Terrorist Training

A resident of Kangan in Jammu & Kashmir's Ganderbal district, Lone had completed a two-year Islamic madrasa course at Salafiya Arabic College in Batmalu. Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha revealed that during 2004-2005, Lone's locality was frequently visited by LeT terrorists Abu Huzaifa, Abu Bakar, and Faisal for food and logistical support.

"Huzaifa recruited him into the LeT cadre, where he underwent Daura-e-Aam—basic training in small arms and grenade-throwing for 21 days—followed by three-month Daura-e-Khas training in handling AK rifles, rocket launchers, IEDs, and LMGs," Kushwaha stated. The officer added that Lone also received Daura-e-Sufa training at the Muzaffarabad LeT camp, designed to brainwash youth for terrorist activities.

Multiple Arrests and Disappearance

Lone's first encounter with law enforcement occurred in 2007 when the special cell arrested him following recovery of a heavy arms cache including AK-47 rifles and grenades, for which he was later convicted. In 2016, authorities arrested him again for illegal arms possession, with additional action from the Enforcement Directorate. Recognizing increasing pressure, Lone knew it was time to disappear.

"He reconnected with Huzaifa through encrypted applications and began radicalizing and recruiting youth for LeT. Huzaifa introduced him to Pakistan-based LeT commander Sumama Babar," Kushwaha explained. Babar, who carries a Rs 3 lakh reward, is responsible for radicalizing, motivating, and recruiting youth in India, primarily in Kashmir Valley, through various social media platforms according to police intelligence.

The Bangladesh Connection

The political turmoil in Bangladesh during 2024 marked a strategic turning point. Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) dispatched Lone to Bangladesh with instructions to establish a terrorist cell targeting India. In March 2025, Lone crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border with his wife and family, establishing a launching pad in Saidpur area. He further married a local Bangladeshi woman to facilitate assimilation.

Soon after establishing his base, Lone began recruiting both Bangladeshi and Indian youth from states and union territories beyond Jammu & Kashmir to execute terrorist operations within India, according to police investigations.

Module Operations and Recruitment

During their investigation, a team led by DCP Praveen Tripathi with inspectors Sunil Rajain and Dheeraj Mahlawat discovered that Lone first relocated to Gurgaon, where he recruited Umar Faruq who subsequently led the module in the inflammatory posters case. He then began identifying Bangladeshi nationals who could infiltrate India for terrorist activities while also serving as sleeper cells.

The module conducted reconnaissance missions at sensitive locations nationwide, including temples and high-footfall public areas. They transmitted video footage of these surveillance operations back to handlers in Pakistan, police confirmed.

The Digital Investigation Breakthrough

The investigation highlights how modern counterterrorism operations increasingly rely on digital forensics alongside traditional intelligence methods. The correlation between encrypted communications and physical movements created an evidentiary chain that proved instrumental in dismantling this terrorist network.

Security agencies emphasize that while encryption technologies present challenges, operational mistakes by terrorists—like maintaining consistent contact patterns—often create vulnerabilities that investigators can exploit through sophisticated digital surveillance techniques.
