In a remarkable display of alertness and swift action, two Delhi Police officers turned a routine patrol into a life-saving mission in the upscale Patel Nagar area on Sunday evening. Their timely intervention saved a young man who was attempting to take his own life.
A Routine Patrol Turns Critical
The incident unfolded around 7 pm on Sunday when Head Constable Yogesh and Constable Ajay were conducting their regular beat patrol. The calm of the evening was abruptly shattered by the desperate screams of a woman. The officers immediately sprang into action, tracing the source of the cries through the neighbourhood lanes.
They eventually reached a five-storey house, where they found a highly distressed and disoriented woman at the entrance. In a state of shock, she managed to convey to the policemen that her 26-year-old son had locked himself inside a room and was trying to end his life.
The Race to Break Down the Door
Understanding the extreme urgency of the situation, the two officers rushed up three flights of stairs. "The house had three rooms, and the woman was too shaken to guide us properly. After repeated attempts, we forced open a locked door," recounted Head Constable Yogesh.
Inside, they were met with a harrowing sight. The young man was found hanging from a ceiling fan, using a bedsheet as a noose. He was already unconscious. "It seemed he would not survive for more than a few seconds," Yogesh recalled, highlighting the critical nature of the moment.
Swift Action Saves a Life
Without a second's hesitation, Constable Ajay ran and lifted the man's legs to relieve the pressure on his neck. Simultaneously, Head Constable Yogesh dashed to the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife, and began cutting through the bedsheet. Working in perfect coordination, the duo managed to bring the man down alive as family members and colony security guards began to gather.
The rescued man was unable to stand or speak. Constable Ajay made him sit upright, gave him water, and sprinkled some on his face to help revive him. "Even a delay of a few more seconds could have proved fatal. He was barely breathing," Ajay stated.
Aftermath and Recognition
As the situation stabilised and her son was rushed to the hospital, the mother revealed to the police that the family was under severe stress due to an ongoing property dispute. She also shared that her husband had died of a heart attack just a year ago, a loss that had profoundly affected her son. The young man was discharged from the hospital late on Sunday night.
DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan commended the officers for their exceptional presence of mind and announced that they would be suitably rewarded for their bravery. Grateful family members expressed their deep gratitude to the policemen for their immediate and decisive action.
This incident underscores the vital role of frontline police personnel and highlights the importance of mental health awareness and support systems within communities.
