A tragic sequence of events stemming from a petty argument over a mere twenty rupees culminated in a murder-suicide in East Delhi on Thursday. A 48-year-old man, after allegedly strangling his wife to death, died by suicide by jumping in front of a moving train while attempting to evade arrest.
The Fatal Argument and Alleged Murder
The incident unfolded in the Kasturba Nagar area of Shahdara. According to police officials, the deceased, Kulwant Singh, had a heated argument with his wife, Mahendra Kaur, on Wednesday morning. The dispute reportedly began after Singh asked Kaur for Rs 20.
"Enraged by Kaur’s response, he strangled her on the roof of their house, and took the body inside," a senior police officer stated. The couple's son, Shivcharan, was present at the house when the police later arrived. Initially, Shivcharan told the officers that his mother had died by suicide.
Police Investigation and Chase
However, law enforcement officials quickly grew suspicious. Upon examining the scene and the woman's body, they noticed clear marks of strangulation on her neck, indicating foul play. This discovery immediately shifted the investigation towards homicide, and a search was launched for the missing Kulwant Singh.
The manhunt led police to a railway track in the vicinity. When officers located Singh, he was found sitting despondently on the tracks. The sight of the approaching police prompted him to start running in a desperate bid to escape.

"In order to avoid arrest, he jumped in front of a moving train," the police officer explained. The incident occurred on Thursday, December 27, 2025. Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital, but medical professionals declared him dead upon arrival.
The police revealed that the family, now shattered by the double tragedy, consisted of Kulwant Singh, Mahendra Kaur, their two sons, and a daughter. The case highlights a devastating escalation of domestic conflict into extreme violence, leaving children orphaned and a community in shock over the trivial origin of the dispute.
