A Delhi court on Thursday granted three-day police custody of the chairman of Al-Falah University in connection with an alleged financial irregularities case. The chairman was produced before the court after his arrest by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police.
Details of the Case
The EOW had arrested the chairman on Wednesday following a complaint alleging misappropriation of funds and cheating. The police sought his custody for interrogation to unravel the financial transactions and recover documents related to the case. The court, after hearing arguments, allowed the police to keep him in custody for three days.
Allegations Against the Chairman
According to the complaint, the chairman, along with other university officials, allegedly siphoned off funds collected from students and misused them for personal gains. The EOW has registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating, criminal breach of trust, and fraud.
Police Investigation
The investigating officer stated that the chairman's custody was essential to uncover the modus operandi and identify other accused persons. The police also suspect that the funds were diverted to shell companies, and they need to examine the financial records in detail.
The defense counsel opposed the custody plea, arguing that the chairman was a respected academician and had cooperated with the investigation. However, the court rejected the contention and remanded him to police custody.
Further investigation is underway, and the police are likely to question the chairman regarding the financial dealings of the university over the past few years. The case has sent shockwaves among the academic community, with many calling for a thorough probe into the affairs of private universities.
