Coimbatore Police Nab Two Ambulance Drivers in Major Drug Bust
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Coimbatore city police apprehended two individuals employed as private ambulance drivers on Thursday. The arrests were made following a targeted operation that led to the seizure of approximately 3 kilograms of ganja and a small quantity of methamphetamine.
Details of the Arrested Individuals
The police have identified the suspects as M Sundaramahalingam, aged 29, originally from Sivaganga district but currently residing in a rental accommodation at Highways Colony in Coimbatore city, and S Musthafa, aged 28, a resident of South Ukkadam. Both men were working as drivers for a private ambulance service at the time of their arrest.
Operation and Seizure
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding the duo's involvement in drug peddling activities, law enforcement officers conducted a thorough search at Sundaramahalingam's rental residence. During the raid, authorities discovered and confiscated 3 kilograms of ganja along with 0.48 grams of methamphetamine. The police confirmed that the suspects were actively engaged in procuring these illicit substances from suppliers and distributing them to local consumers.
"The two are also in the habit of consuming drugs themselves," stated a senior police officer involved in the case. "Our investigation revealed their dual role as both users and peddlers, which posed a serious threat to public safety."
Legal Proceedings and Further Actions
Following the seizure, the Coimbatore police formally registered a case against Sundaramahalingam and Musthafa under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The arrested individuals were subsequently presented before a judicial magistrate, who ordered their remand in judicial custody. Police officials have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing to uncover potential links to larger drug networks and identify other accomplices.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by Tamil Nadu police to combat drug-related crimes in urban areas, particularly those involving individuals in trusted professions. The use of ambulance services as a cover for illicit activities has raised concerns about the need for stricter background checks and monitoring within such sectors.
