Two young men from Chennai were taken into custody in Bengaluru for allegedly harassing a group of women and subsequently assaulting police personnel in the early hours of New Year's Day. The incident occurred outside a bar near the Cunningham Road and Dr Ambedkar Veedhi junction.
Details of the Alleged Harassment
The accused, identified as Ansh Mehta and Parv Rathi, both 22 years old, are employed in private firms and live in paying guest accommodations in Bommasandra. According to the police, the duo approached four women who were waiting for a cab outside the bar and began making lewd comments towards them.
The situation escalated when one of the women spotted two constables from the Vidhana Soudha police station passing by and alerted them. Instead of backing down, the accused allegedly turned their aggression towards the police officers.
Assault on Police Personnel
Constable Ravi, who filed the official complaint, described the confrontation. "We questioned the youths, directing them to move away. But they charged at us. First, they pushed us and then tore our jackets," he stated. The officers managed to subdue the men and transport them to the Vidhana Soudha police station in a Hoysala patrol vehicle.
However, the misbehavior did not end there. Police reports indicate that the accused continued to act aggressively and misbehaved with the staff at the police station after they were brought in.
Legal Consequences and Custody
Following the filing of the complaint and necessary procedures, Ansh Mehta and Parv Rathi were remanded to judicial custody. They are currently held at the Bengaluru Central Prison located in Parappana Agrahara. The case highlights concerns regarding public safety and the safety of women, especially during late-night hours.
The police action demonstrates a firm response to incidents involving harassment of women and obstruction of police duty. The incident serves as a reminder of the legal repercussions for such acts of public misconduct and assault on law enforcement officials.
