Madhu Kumari had entered into matrimony with Chandan Kumar, originally hailing from Bettiah in West Champaran district, in February 2025. The newlyweds had been residing in their Jamalpur rental property for approximately three months prior to the tragedy.

According to preliminary police reports, the accused sub-inspector claimed that his wife had taken her own life while he was occupied in the bathroom. However, Madhu's grieving family members immediately filed a formal First Information Report (FIR) accusing Chandan Kumar of premeditated murder driven by insatiable dowry demands, leading directly to his subsequent arrest.
Madhu Kumari was the daughter of Ranjeet Kumar, a respected resident of Bithan village in Samastipur district. Family sources revealed that the couple initially met while jointly preparing for competitive Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examinations, with their academic friendship gradually blossoming into a romantic relationship. After Chandan successfully secured his position as a police sub-inspector, both families consented to the union.
