Bihar Police Sub-Inspector Arrested for Alleged Dowry Murder of Wife in Munger

A police sub-inspector posted at Safiasarai police station in Bihar's Munger district has been arrested and sent to judicial custody for allegedly murdering his wife over persistent dowry demands, according to official police statements released on Sunday. The shocking incident has sent ripples through the local community and raised serious questions about law enforcement accountability.

Tragic Discovery at Rented Residence

The victim, identified as Madhu Kumari (29), was discovered lying in a pool of blood with a single bullet wound to her chest at the couple's rented accommodation in Jamalpur late on Saturday evening. Her husband, Sub-Inspector Chandan Kumar, along with concerned neighbors, rushed the critically injured woman to a private medical facility where attending physicians declared her brought dead upon arrival.

Investigators confirmed that only the married couple was present within the household at the time of the fatal incident. Madhu Kumari had entered into matrimony with Chandan Kumar, originally hailing from Bettiah in West Champaran district, in February 2025. The newlyweds had been residing in their Jamalpur rental property for approximately three months prior to the tragedy.

Conflicting Narratives and Family Allegations

According to preliminary police reports, the accused sub-inspector claimed that his wife had taken her own life while he was occupied in the bathroom. However, Madhu's grieving family members immediately filed a formal First Information Report (FIR) accusing Chandan Kumar of premeditated murder driven by insatiable dowry demands, leading directly to his subsequent arrest.

Madhu Kumari was the daughter of Ranjeet Kumar, a respected resident of Bithan village in Samastipur district. Family sources revealed that the couple initially met while jointly preparing for competitive Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examinations, with their academic friendship gradually blossoming into a romantic relationship. After Chandan successfully secured his position as a police sub-inspector, both families consented to the union.

Substantial Dowry Demands and Marital Discord

The victim's relatives made startling allegations regarding extravagant dowry transactions, asserting that they had provided approximately Rs 55 lakh in cash alongside a four-wheel vehicle at the time of the wedding ceremony. They further contended that Chandan Kumar continued to press for additional monetary resources and valuable items throughout the marriage, creating recurring conflicts and domestic tension between the spouses.

Local residents reported hearing a heated argument emanating from the couple's residence on Saturday morning. Later that evening, neighbors were startled by the unmistakable sound of a gunshot from the same location and promptly notified law enforcement authorities. Police personnel arriving at the scene discovered Madhu Kumari in critical condition and transported her to a private hospital in Munger, where she was officially pronounced deceased.

Police Investigation and Judicial Proceedings

Sub-Inspector Chandan Kumar underwent extensive interrogation at the medical facility until late Saturday night. During questioning, he maintained his original account: "I was inside the bathroom when I heard a gunshot. Upon emerging, I found Madhu collapsed on the floor with a chest wound. With assistance from neighbors, I immediately took her to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries."

Madhu's distraught father, who traveled to Munger upon receiving news of the catastrophe, vehemently rejected the suicide theory. "Our beloved daughter has been brutally murdered," he asserted. "How could any woman possibly shoot herself directly in the chest? Her husband was the sole person present in the house. There have been continuous disputes between them for several months regarding dowry matters."

Munger Superintendent of Police Syed Imran Masood confirmed that a murder case has been formally registered based on the comprehensive complaint submitted by the victim's father. "The FIR specifically alleges that the accused sub-inspector was persistently demanding money and valuable assets while subjecting Madhu to severe harassment over dowry expectations. Based on these grave allegations, the accused has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody," the senior police official stated.

The case continues to undergo thorough investigation as authorities examine forensic evidence, witness testimonies, and the complex dynamics surrounding the tragic demise of Madhu Kumari. This incident highlights the persistent societal challenge of dowry-related violence despite stringent legal prohibitions.
