During Republic Day celebrations, the community gathered to officially designate the road connecting Laggere and Rajgopal Nagar as Ramesh Chandra Hebri Road. This naming ceremony honored advocate Ramesh Chandra, whose unwavering dedication helped residents reclaim what was rightfully theirs through the judicial system.
The Beginning of a Two-Decade Struggle
The residents' ordeal began in 2006 when two developers, who also held positions as local politicians, abruptly blocked the road. They claimed the thoroughfare was private property, forcing over 450 households to endure an additional four-kilometer detour just to reach their homes. This sudden obstruction transformed daily commutes into frustrating journeys and severed community connections.
"We decided to approach the courts in 2006," recalled Halesh C, vice-president of the Kasturi Layout Residents' Welfare Association. "Some friends suggested we contact Ramesh Chandra from Chamarajpet, and that decision changed everything."
Legal Battles and Criminal Intimidation
What began as a civil petition quickly escalated into a complex legal confrontation. When residents filed their case seeking relief through Chandra's representation, the developers retaliated by filing a criminal case against the community members themselves.
"We were up against influential people who misused political power," Halesh explained. "There were threats and intimidation, but Ramesh Chandra stood by us through both the civil and criminal proceedings. He was our rock during the most challenging moments."
Judicial Victories and Official Confirmation
The legal journey saw several significant milestones:
- In 2010, a civil court ruled in favor of residents, declaring the road public property according to original layout plans
- When developers appealed to the Karnataka High Court in 2013, Justice Anand Byra Reddy issued an interim order allowing road access during proceedings
- The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike conducted an official survey confirming the road's public status as per court directions
- Despite opportunities to file objections, the developers repeatedly failed to appear in court
The final victory came in December 2025 when Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum delivered the conclusive judgment, firmly establishing that the disputed property was not private land.

Ramesh Chandra, with thirty-eight years of legal practice, approached the case with professional dedication rather than expectation of recognition. "I never expected or wanted this honor," he stated. "Fighting for my clients is simply my duty. I'm profoundly happy that justice ultimately prevailed."
He acknowledged the challenges faced during the prolonged battle, noting that "even local police initially seemed to work for influential interests. But neither the residents nor I surrendered to pressure."

"There were periods when we struggled to pay his fees," Halesh admitted. "The opposition even attempted to lure him away. Yet he remained steadfast. We use this road today because of his efforts, and naming it after him is our heartfelt token of appreciation."
For Chandra, the honor carries deep personal significance. "I feel genuinely proud that the road bears my name," he shared. "This recognition from the community I served makes the long struggle worthwhile."
