In response to a significant Rs 15 crore cyberfraud case that victimized an elderly resident, the Belagavi City police have rolled out an extensive public awareness campaign designed to protect citizens, with particular emphasis on senior citizens, from increasingly sophisticated digital scams.
Focus on Vulnerable Senior Citizens
City Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase emphasized that the campaign specifically targets elderly individuals, especially those from affluent and upper-middle-class backgrounds who are becoming prime targets for cybercriminals. "We are particularly concerned about senior citizens as they are more vulnerable to such fraud schemes," Commissioner Borase stated during an interview. "Our teams are actively reaching out to senior citizens' groups and organizations to build awareness about digital safety protocols."
Evolving Nature of Organized Cybercrime
Commissioner Borase highlighted the alarming evolution of cybercrime operations, noting that many frauds now involve highly organized networks with potential complicity from banking insiders who leak sensitive customer information. "Fraudsters systematically target individuals with substantial bank balances, making retired and elderly citizens our top priority for protection," he explained.
While acknowledging resource limitations that prevent a full-scale door-to-door campaign across the entire city, the police department has devised an innovative approach to expand their grassroots outreach:

- Deploying police teams to visit residential localities for direct community interaction

Commissioner Borase stressed that delays in filing complaints often hinder investigations into various scams including fake investment schemes, lottery frauds, and deceptive part-time job offers. "Timely reporting is crucial for our ability to track and apprehend cybercriminals," he noted.
