Mysterious Leopardess Death in Shivamogga Raises Alarm Over Habitat Health
In a concerning development for wildlife conservation, a sub-adult leopardess was discovered dead on Monday in an areca plantation at Tadasanahalli, located in the Shikaripura taluk of Shivamogga district. This incident occurred just one day after reports emerged of a leopard attacking humans in the same area, heightening local fears and marking the second unexplained feline fatality in the taluk within a single month.
Preliminary Findings and Expert Doubts
Initial observations by forest officials suggested that the leopardess, which had caused significant panic among villagers, might have died from starvation. However, this theory has been met with skepticism from some wildlife experts and activists. They point out that the animal appeared to be in healthy condition, leading to suspicions that poisoning could be the actual cause of death.
Mohammed Fayajuddin, the Deputy Conservator of Forests for the Sagar division, informed The Times of India that preliminary inspections revealed no external wounds or injuries on the carcass, and the claws remained intact. He confirmed that a postmortem examination was conducted, with samples collected for further analysis, though officials currently lean towards starvation as the likely reason.
Context of Recent Attacks and Deaths
The timing of this death adds to the urgency of the situation. Villager Shivaraj Patil noted that the leopardess was found dead only a day after it attacked residents, an event that resulted in injuries to villagers from Adaganti and Tadasanahalli. These individuals were admitted to McGann District Hospital in Shivamogga for treatment. Patil emphasized that there had been no history of leopard aggression in the area since a solitary incident four years ago, making this recent spate of events particularly alarming.
This incident follows another mysterious death on February 24, when a two-month-old leopard died in an agricultural pond in Dindadahalli village. That case was also attributed to starvation, but critics have argued that forest officials failed to conduct a thorough investigation or secure a toxicology report, raising questions about the handling of such incidents.
Calls for Detailed Investigation
A wildlife activist, speaking to The Times of India, urged the forest department to obtain a comprehensive toxicology report for the latest case, stressing that the leopardess looked healthy and that poisoning cannot be ruled out without proper testing. The recurring nature of these fatalities has sparked serious concerns regarding habitat health and prey availability in the region, prompting calls for a more detailed and transparent inquiry into both deaths.
As authorities continue their investigations, the local community remains on edge, with the mysterious deaths highlighting broader issues in wildlife management and conservation efforts in Shivamogga.
