Bar Council Election Concludes with Robust Participation

The election for the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry successfully concluded on Monday, marked by an impressive voter turnout exceeding 80%. The counting of votes is scheduled to commence on April 3, determining the selection of 23 members to the council.

Supreme Court-Appointed Committee Oversees Process

The electoral proceedings were managed by a high-power committee established by the Supreme Court. This committee was led by former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, Justice Rajiv Shakdher, and included senior advocate E Om Prakash and advocate Amit George. Former judge of the Madras High Court, Justice K N Basha, served as the returning officer, ensuring the integrity of the election.

Innovative QR Code System Introduced

Polling was conducted across 166 booths in Tamil Nadu and two in Puducherry, operating from 10 am to 5 pm. Notably, this election featured the inaugural use of a QR code system for verifying voter details, enhancing the efficiency and security of the voting process. A total of 143 candidates contested for the available positions, reflecting a competitive electoral landscape.

Political Figures Participate Actively

Several political leaders who are also practicing lawyers participated in the election by casting their votes. Key figures included R S Bharathi of the DMK, Thol Thirumavalavan of the VCK, and Vanathi Srinivasan of the BJP, highlighting the intersection of legal and political spheres in this process.

Peaceful Conduct and High Voter Engagement

According to senior advocate and vice chairman of the Bar Council of India, S Prabakaran, approximately 80,000 votes were polled across Tamil Nadu. He commended the peaceful conduct of the election in all polling booths, attributing the success to the high-power committee appointed by the Supreme Court. This high level of engagement underscores the significance of the Bar Council election within the legal community.
