The Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district in Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a dramatic improvement in its law and order situation, with overall crime plummeting by a significant 34 per cent in the year 2025. Official data reveals that total registered offences dropped from 2,304 in 2024 to just 1,498 last year, marking a substantial turnaround for the region.
Decisive Blow to Maoist Insurgency
According to ASR District Police Chief Amit Bardar, the status of Left Wing Extremism, particularly concerning the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC), has reached a critical turning point. Sustained and high-level security operations conducted throughout 2024 and 2025 have successfully dismantled the Maoist leadership structure in the district.
In 2025 alone, security forces neutralized 18 Maoists, including several top leaders, in seven separate exchanges of fire. The pressure led to a wave of surrenders, with 49 Maoists laying down their arms before the police. An additional nine were arrested during the year, significantly crippling the outfit's operational capabilities.
Mixed Trends in Specific Crime Categories
While the overall crime graph shows a steep decline, a few specific categories saw a marginal increase. Cases of theft, daytime burglaries, criminal breach of trust, and fatal road accidents registered a slight uptick in 2025 compared to the previous year.
However, major violent crimes showed notable improvement. Murder cases reduced from 27 in 2024 to 20 in 2025. Incidents of rape also declined from 25 to 22. Bodily offences, which include acts causing hurt, saw a positive trend, dropping from 183 cases to 156.
Major Success in Anti-Narcotics Operations
The district police's focused crackdown on ganja (cannabis) cultivation and trafficking yielded significant results. While the number of cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act fell to 135 in 2025 from 232 in 2024, the quality of seizures and arrests points to a strategic success.
Police confiscated a massive 14,484.38 kilograms of dry cannabis and 35.61 kg of hashish oil during the year. A total of 358 accused were arrested in connection with these NDPS cases. Of these arrests, 242 were from within Andhra Pradesh, while 122 were from other states, indicating the inter-state network of the drug trade.
In a parallel drive, the police also apprehended 178 accused who were absconding in previous cases. This included 88 from within the district, 31 from other districts of the state, and 59 from other states, showcasing a wide-reaching effort to bring offenders to justice.
The comprehensive data for 2025 paints a picture of a district where concerted police action, especially against extremism and narcotics, is creating a tangible impact on public safety and security.
