Arunachal Women's Alertness Leads to Rearrest of Escaped Murder Convict
In a remarkable demonstration of community vigilance, women from Nikja village in Arunachal Pradesh's Kurung Kumey district played a pivotal role in assisting police to rearrest a murder convict who had escaped from custody. Escape from Koloriang Sub-Jail
Birju Bhumij, a convict sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder, managed to escape from Koloriang sub-jail on Tuesday evening. According to Jail Superintendent David Koyu, the escape occurred around 7 PM when a guard allowed Bhumij to fetch warm water from the kitchen due to his reported fever. This lapse in security enabled Bhumij to give authorities the slip, with the incident only coming to light on Wednesday morning, triggering an immediate and extensive manhunt.
Community Cooperation in Rearrest
The search concluded successfully hours later, thanks to the sharp-eyed women of Nikja village, located approximately 2 kilometers from Koloriang. While on their way to the fields, these women spotted Bhumij and quickly recognized him due to his distinct one-eyed appearance. Without hesitation, they alerted the police, leading to his prompt rearrest. Bhumij, a resident of Assam's Sonitpur district, was taken back into custody, highlighting the effectiveness of community-police partnerships.
