Police in Kerala's Kattakada have made an arrest following a shocking incident where a domestic dispute escalated into an accidental air gun firing, leaving a young man injured. The event, which unfolded in Thoongampara, has highlighted the dangers of negligent weapon handling within households.
Arrest Made in Thoongampara Air Gun Case
On Friday night, Kattakada police arrested a 36-year-old man named Sajeev in connection with the shooting. The incident occurred on Thursday evening around 4 pm at a residence in Thoongampara. The arrested individual is the brother-in-law of the injured youth, 27-year-old Ajith Kumar, also a resident of Thoongampara.
How the Family Dispute Turned Violent
According to preliminary police investigations, the trigger for the violent turn of events was a heated argument between Kumar and Sajeev. The dispute reportedly stemmed from long-standing family issues that had been festering. What began as a verbal altercation quickly spiraled into a physical scuffle inside the house.
During the confrontation, an air gun in Sajeev's possession accidentally discharged. The pellet struck Ajith Kumar on his shoulder, causing a serious injury. Alerted by the commotion, other family members immediately intervened. They first rushed Kumar to a nearby hospital for urgent care. Given the severity, he was later shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (MCH) for advanced treatment.
Victim's Condition and Police Investigation
Hospital authorities at the MCH have reported that Ajith Kumar's condition is now stable and that the injury is not life-threatening. This has brought some relief to the tense situation.
Following the incident, police launched a swift investigation. After questioning family members and other witnesses, they took Sajeev into custody. Though initial findings suggest the firing was not deliberate, the police have registered a case citing negligent handling of a weapon. The arrest was made based on the available evidence gathered at the scene.
The key piece of evidence, the air gun used in the incident, has been seized by the police. It has been sent for a detailed forensic examination to corroborate the sequence of events. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances and to determine if additional charges are warranted against the accused.
