SIT Uncovers Rampant Donation Theft at Ram Temple
An investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has revealed that donation boxes at the Ram Temple in Uttar Pradesh were looted 70 times in just two months, with temple staff allegedly involved in the thefts. The SIT, formed by the state government, submitted its preliminary report detailing the scale of the brazen heists.
The thefts occurred between April and May 2026, with an average of more than one theft per day. According to the SIT report, the stolen amount is estimated to be in the lakhs, though the exact figure is still being calculated. The investigation was launched after temple authorities noticed a significant drop in donation collections despite a rise in visitor numbers.
Staff Implicated in Systematic Looting
The SIT found that multiple temple employees were involved in the thefts, using duplicate keys to access the donation boxes. The modus operandi involved removing cash during night shifts or when the temple was less crowded. The team has identified at least six staff members who have confessed to their role in the thefts during interrogation.
“The SIT has gathered substantial evidence, including CCTV footage and financial records, that point to a well-organized racket,” said a senior police officer involved in the investigation. “The accused have admitted to stealing from the donation boxes regularly over the two-month period.”
Security Measures Strengthened
In response to the findings, the temple administration has implemented stricter security protocols, including the installation of additional CCTV cameras, regular audits of donation collections, and the replacement of old donation boxes with tamper-proof ones. The SIT has also recommended the suspension of the implicated staff and a thorough review of the temple’s security arrangements.
“We are committed to ensuring the sanctity of donations and will take strict action against anyone found guilty,” said a temple trust spokesperson. The state government has promised a fast-track trial for the accused, emphasizing that such thefts are a serious breach of faith.
Impact on Devotees and Temple Revenue
The revelations have caused outrage among devotees, who consider donations to the temple a sacred act. Many have demanded a full inquiry into the temple’s financial management. The thefts have also impacted the temple’s revenue, which relies heavily on donations for maintenance and charitable activities.
The SIT is continuing its investigation and has not ruled out the involvement of external elements. The final report is expected to be submitted within a month, which may include recommendations for legal reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.
