At least 29 thatched dwellings of migrant workers were completely destroyed in a fire that broke out early Saturday morning in Lalsinghi village, located on the outskirts of Una city. The Fire Department confirmed that no loss of life or injuries occurred during the incident.
Fire broke out at 6:30 am
According to the District Emergency Operation Centre, the fire started around 6:30 am in one of the huts. Due to the dense clustering of hundreds of migrant families living in close proximity, the flames spread rapidly to adjacent dwellings. Residents, including elderly people and children, managed to escape to safety without harm.
Firefighters and locals douse the blaze
Firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and, with the assistance of local residents, brought the fire under control. The Fire Department deployed four water bowsers to extinguish the flames. An assessment of the property damage is currently underway.
Recurring fire incidents in the settlement
The Lalsinghi migrant settlement has experienced repeated fire incidents, particularly during the peak summer season. Despite repeated advisories from the district administration urging migrant families to relocate to affordable structures made of fire-resistant materials, these warnings have largely been ignored.
