Central Government Disburses Rs 387 Crore to Telangana Gram Panchayats
In a significant move to bolster rural development, the central government on Friday released Rs 387 crore as the third tranche of funds under the 15th Finance Commission to gram panchayats across Telangana. This latest allocation elevates the total funds received by the state under this commission to Rs 1,034 crore, marking a substantial financial infusion aimed at enhancing village-level infrastructure and services.
Phased Release Following Gram Panchayat Elections
Officials clarified that the funds are being distributed in a phased manner, a process initiated after the completion of gram panchayat elections and the subsequent assumption of office by the newly elected bodies. This structured approach ensures that the financial resources are aligned with the operational readiness of local governance structures, facilitating targeted and efficient utilisation.
Focus on Rural Development and Infrastructure
The released funds are earmarked for a wide array of rural development programmes, with a primary focus on:
- Village infrastructure development to upgrade basic amenities.
- Sanitation management to improve public health and hygiene.
- Drinking water supply projects to ensure access to clean water.
- Installation of street lights for enhanced safety and connectivity.
- Repairs of internal roads to boost transportation and economic activity.
These initiatives are expected to drive comprehensive progress in rural Telangana, addressing critical needs and fostering sustainable growth.
Pending Funds and Ministerial Appeals
Officials further disclosed that an additional Rs 2,000 crore in grants is due to Telangana under the Finance Commission, with expectations set for its release in subsequent phases. Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister D Anasuya, also known as Seethakka, has urged the Centre to expedite the release of these pending funds. She emphasised that an uninterrupted flow of financial support is crucial for the continued advancement of rural development works, preventing delays and ensuring momentum in ongoing projects.
Ensuring Effective Utilisation of Funds
Minister Seethakka has directed officials to prioritise the effective utilisation of the funds already released. Key directives include:
- Clearing pending bills to maintain financial transparency and accountability.
- Expediting essential infrastructure works, particularly in sanitation, to address immediate community needs.
This proactive oversight aims to maximise the impact of the allocated resources, ensuring that every rupee contributes directly to the betterment of rural livelihoods and infrastructure in Telangana.
