Indian Railways Implements QR Code System for Food Vendors to Enhance Passenger Safety

In a significant move to guarantee safe, clean, and high-quality food for passengers, Indian Railways has launched a strict crackdown on unauthorized vending activities on trains and at stations. The authorities have now mandated that all authorized catering vendors must carry identification cards equipped with QR codes, a measure designed to boost transparency and trust in railway food services.

Addressing Complaints and Ensuring Quality

Previously, there were numerous complaints regarding unauthorized vendors selling food items not only at railway stations but also directly on trains. Railway officials emphasized that the primary goal is to provide quality food to passengers, as illegal vendors serving substandard food can severely damage the railways' reputation. With this new system, authorized vendors will wear proper ID cards featuring a QR code on the back. Passengers simply need to scan the code using their mobile phones to access comprehensive details about the vendor and their legal agreement with the railway.

How the QR Code System Works

According to officials, this initiative allows railway passengers to instantly verify a vendor's identity and authenticity by scanning the QR code. The scan will reveal essential information such as the vendor's name, address, stall number, and verification status. Additionally, QR codes are being printed on food packages themselves, providing data on the quality and hygiene standards of the food. This dual-layered approach is expected to effectively prevent unauthorized vending and reduce food-related complaints, ensuring a safer dining experience for travelers.

Official Statement on the Initiative

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Ferozepur division, Paramdeep Singh Saini, highlighted that this initiative represents a crucial step toward ensuring safety, convenience, and improved service for passengers. He noted that the system not only enhances accountability but also empowers passengers to make informed choices about their food purchases while traveling.

The implementation of QR code ID cards is part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to modernize its catering services and uphold high standards of food safety. By leveraging technology, the railways aim to create a more transparent and reliable environment for millions of passengers who rely on train services daily.
