Gurgaon's MCG Enforces Strict Photo Documentation for Park Upkeep
The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has rolled out a stringent new directive targeting Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) across the city. In a bid to ensure consistent and high-quality maintenance of public parks, the civic body now requires RWAs to submit regular photographic evidence of their upkeep efforts. This move aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the management of urban green spaces.
Mandatory GPS-Tagged Photographs for Verification
Under the fresh guidelines, RWAs responsible for maintaining neighbourhood parks must provide colour printouts of GPS-tagged photographs. These images must document the condition of each park under their care, serving as irrefutable proof that maintenance activities are being diligently performed. The order specifies that six photographs covering the entire park area must be taken during three distinct periods every month: between the 1st and 5th, the 15th and 20th, and the 25th and 30th.
Officials have emphasized that these photographs must capture the full expanse of the park, showcasing aspects such as gardening, cleanliness, and overall upkeep. The directive, issued by the Executive Engineer (Horticulture), states that non-compliance will result in the non-processing of payments for park maintenance. RWAs are required to submit these photos along with their monthly maintenance bills during the first week of the following month.
Financial Implications and Park Statistics
MCG officials revealed that there are approximately 1,400 parks in Gurgaon, with nearly 90% of them maintained by RWAs. The corporation compensates these associations at a rate of Rs 4.63 per square metre for park maintenance, with this amount increasing by 5% annually. In the current fiscal year 2026-27, MCG has allocated a substantial Rs 30 crore for the repair and maintenance of parks, marking a significant rise from the previous year's allocation of Rs 26 crore.
This increase follows a trend of growing investment in urban greenery. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, MCG spent nearly Rs 22 crore on park maintenance across the city, up from Rs 15 crore allocated in the 2024-25 fiscal year. The enhanced funding underscores the civic body's commitment to improving public spaces and ensuring they are well-maintained for residents' enjoyment.
Broader Impact on Urban Governance
The introduction of GPS-tagged photographic proof represents a shift towards more data-driven and accountable urban management in Gurgaon. By leveraging technology, MCG aims to streamline oversight and reduce discrepancies in maintenance reporting. This initiative is expected to foster better compliance among RWAs, ultimately leading to cleaner and more vibrant parks throughout the city.
Residents and community leaders have welcomed the move, viewing it as a step towards more efficient use of public funds and enhanced quality of life. As Gurgaon continues to expand, such measures are crucial for maintaining its infrastructure and green cover, aligning with broader goals of sustainable urban development.
