Karnataka's Urban Waste Generation Reaches 7,304 Metric Tons Daily
In a significant revelation regarding urban sanitation, Karnataka's 325 urban local bodies (ULBs) collectively produce a staggering 7,304 metric tons of solid waste every single day. This data was disclosed by Minister Khan while responding to a detailed query posed by BJP member D S Arun during a recent parliamentary session.
Current Waste Processing Status and Government Initiatives
The minister further elaborated that out of these 325 ULBs, 219 have already established and are actively operating solid waste processing facilities. This means a substantial portion of the daily waste output is being managed through systematic processing methods. However, the government has acknowledged the gap and is taking proactive measures to ensure comprehensive waste management across the state.
Key steps include extending processing infrastructure to the remaining urban local bodies that currently lack such facilities. Notably, this expansion plan also encompasses 27 newly formed ULBs within Karnataka, ensuring that waste management keeps pace with urban growth and development.
The government's initiative aims to transform waste handling from mere collection to effective processing, addressing environmental concerns and promoting sustainable urban living. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance public health standards and maintain cleanliness in Karnataka's rapidly expanding urban landscapes.
