The Haryana Directorate of Secondary Education has raised serious concerns over significant discrepancies in student enrolment data after several recognised private schools across the state failed to update records on the management information system (MIS) portal at the start of the new academic session 2026-27.
In a letter addressed to all district education officers (DEOs) and district elementary education officers (DEEOs), the department noted that many private institutions continue to show 'zero enrolment' on the portal despite functioning with active student populations. Authorities have termed this a serious lapse that could affect planning and policy execution.
Routine Monitoring Reveals Inconsistencies
Officials said the issue came to light during routine monitoring exercises, where inconsistencies between ground realities and digital records were observed. The department has now directed officers to take immediate corrective action and ensure strict compliance by private unaided recognised schools under their jurisdiction.
The department emphasised that all schools must upload details of new admissions, ongoing enrolments and student transitions without further delay. It has also instructed block education officers (BEOs) to follow up with school administrations and circulate relevant reports to ensure transparency.
Critical Role of MIS Portal
Officials said the MIS portal plays a crucial role in shaping state-level decisions, including resource allocation, infrastructure development and implementation of welfare schemes. Any inaccuracies in enrolment data could lead to misinformed decisions and impact the delivery of educational services.
The directive comes amid a broader push by the Haryana government to digitise education governance and improve accountability in both public and private institutions. Over the past few years, the state has increasingly relied on real-time data systems to track student attendance, teacher deployment and institutional performance.
Compliance Challenges
However, compliance from private schools has remained uneven, with officials often citing lack of awareness, technical challenges or administrative delays as reasons for non-updation. Experts say timely and accurate data entry is critical, especially as policymakers focus on improving learning outcomes and fair access to education.
The department has urged all stakeholders to act urgently and ensure the portal shows the true enrolment status at the earliest. The state government continues to emphasise the importance of accurate data for effective governance and resource management in the education sector.
