East Khasi Hills Bans Illegal Mining, Sand Removal from River Beds
East Khasi Hills Bans Illegal Mining and Sand Removal

The East Khasi Hills district administration has imposed an immediate ban on illegal mining and quarrying on hill slopes, as well as the removal of sand from river beds without valid permits. The decision, announced on April 23, comes in response to severe adverse effects on the environment, aquatic life, and public health.

Impact on Water Sources

District Magistrate in-charge HML Kynta issued the order after receiving reports that unauthorized sand removal from river beds, particularly from the Wahniangleng river near Mylliem, has significantly affected water sources in the surrounding and adjoining areas. The practice has disrupted the natural flow and quality of water, posing risks to local communities and ecosystems.

NGT Directive

The order cites a directive from the principal bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in New Delhi, which prohibits any person, company, or authority from conducting mining, quarrying, or sand removal activities anywhere in the country without obtaining a valid mining license, quarry permit, and other clearance certificates prescribed by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The NGT order underscores the urgency of addressing illegal extraction activities that harm the environment.

Immediate Enforcement

In light of the urgency, the DM stated that the order has been passed ex-parte and will come into force with immediate effect throughout the entire East Khasi Hills district. It will remain in effect until further orders are issued. The administration has warned that any violation will attract strict legal action as per existing laws.

The ban aims to curb rampant illegal mining and sand extraction that have led to ecological degradation, including soil erosion, loss of aquatic habitats, and contamination of drinking water sources. The district administration urges all stakeholders to comply with the regulations to protect the region's natural resources.
