Delhi Inaugurates 4 New E-Bus Depots, Aims for 7000+ Electric Buses by 2026
Delhi's 4 New Electric Bus Depots Set for Inauguration

Delhi's ambitious transition to sustainable public transportation has received a significant boost with the completion of four major new electric bus depots. The facilities at Nangloi, Kohat Enclave, Dwarka, and Rithala are now ready for inauguration, marking a pivotal step in the capital's green mobility roadmap.

Modern Infrastructure to Power a Growing Fleet

The newly constructed depots are not just parking lots; they are equipped with state-of-the-art charging infrastructure designed to handle a large fleet of electric buses efficiently. An official confirmed that the construction was completed following a review in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in December last year, which also saw participation from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials.

Each depot is built with advanced operations and management systems, automated scheduling, and dedicated charging bays. This design is specifically intended to minimise the turnaround time for buses, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and service frequency for commuters.

Strategic Locations and Expansion Plans

The strategic placement of these depots at Nangloi, Kohat Enclave, Dwarka, and Rithala is expected to cater to densely populated residential and commercial zones. Their role will be crucial in strengthening both city bus services and feeder services, particularly along metro corridors, creating a more integrated public transport network.

This expansion is part of a larger, aggressive plan to electrify Delhi's bus fleet. Since February last year, 3,518 electric buses have already been inducted. The government's target is to scale this number up to over 5,000 e-buses by March 2026 and further to beyond 7,000 by November 2026.

Building on a Strong Foundation

These four new additions will join Delhi's existing network of over a dozen dedicated electric bus depots. The current list includes facilities at:

  • Mundela Kalan
  • Rohini Sector-37 and Rohini I & II
  • Rajghat
  • BBM Depot
  • Mayapuri
  • Nehru Place
  • Hasanpur
  • Wazirpur
  • Sukhdev Vihar
  • Subhash Place
  • Burari-I

Feeder depots are also operational at Majlis Park and Shastri Park, supporting last-mile connectivity.

Looking ahead, the government has directed agencies to expedite work on upcoming electric bus depots at Mundka and Welcome. To avoid delays, officials stated that the transplantation of trees at these sites will be fast-tracked while ensuring full compliance with environmental norms.

The inauguration of the four new depots represents a concrete move towards reducing the capital's carbon footprint and decongesting its roads. By enhancing the operational backbone for electric buses, Delhi is powering up for a cleaner, more efficient public transport future.
