Delhi Lieutenant Governor Advocates for Technology and Visibility in Traffic Management
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has issued a strong call for enhanced visibility of police personnel and the adoption of advanced technology to improve traffic enforcement and congestion management in Delhi. During a comprehensive review at the Delhi Traffic Police headquarters in Todapur, Sandhu emphasized the critical need for a more proactive and tech-driven approach to address the city's persistent traffic challenges.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Enforcement
Sandhu examined the progress of the Digital Enforcement framework and stressed the importance of scaling up the use of artificial intelligence in traffic monitoring. He highlighted that AI-enabled systems, when supervised by trained personnel, can provide round-the-clock transparent surveillance. This technology is expected to enable more scientific management of peak-hour traffic, aligning Delhi with global smart city standards.
"AI-powered solutions can revolutionize how we handle traffic flow, ensuring efficiency and transparency while reducing human error," Sandhu remarked. He noted that traffic snarls not only result in significant losses of productive hours for commuters but also contribute to unnecessary fuel wastage and increased vehicular emissions, exacerbating environmental concerns.
Increased Police Visibility and Strict Enforcement
The Lieutenant Governor directed the traffic police to boost their presence on roads, particularly at congestion-prone stretches. He called for strict enforcement against common violations, including:
- Wrong-side driving
- Overspeeding
- Lane jumping
- Non-compliance with helmet and seat belt rules
Sandhu asserted that visible enforcement acts as a powerful deterrent, helping to maintain smoother traffic flow and enhance road safety. "When drivers see police actively monitoring, they are more likely to adhere to rules, reducing accidents and bottlenecks," he explained.
Collaboration with Stakeholders and Public Engagement
Emphasizing that traffic management is a shared responsibility, Sandhu urged for deeper collaboration with various stakeholders. This includes Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations, and youth groups to address local bottlenecks and parking issues more effectively. He highlighted the importance of community involvement in creating sustainable solutions.
During the visit, Sandhu also flagged off new disaster management vehicles and a fleet of scooters designated for women traffic personnel, aiming to improve mobility and response capabilities. Additionally, he felicitated "Traffic Praharis," citizen volunteers who support traffic management efforts, recognizing their valuable contributions to public safety.
Review of Digital Challan System
Sandhu reviewed the Digital Challan System, underscoring that leveraging technology for transparent and effective enforcement will foster a culture of self-discipline among commuters. He believes that digital systems not only streamline penalty processes but also promote accountability and reduce corruption.
This initiative is part of a broader push to modernize Delhi's traffic infrastructure, combining technological innovation with human oversight to create a safer and more efficient urban environment.
