Dehradun Municipal Corporation Launches Intensive 100-Day River Rejuvenation Campaign

The Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has officially inaugurated a comprehensive environmental initiative titled "100 Days One Mission – Reviving Our Rivers" as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission. This ambitious campaign is specifically designed to clean, rejuvenate, and restore the health of rivers and drainage systems throughout the city of Dehradun.

Official Inauguration and Campaign Objectives

Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal and Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal formally launched the campaign on Sunday, marking the beginning of a focused 100-day effort. The primary goals include the systematic removal of accumulated rubbish, clearing of silt deposits, and the implementation of regular cleaning operations along major and medium-sized drains as well as riverbanks across the urban landscape.

Commissioner Bansal emphasized the critical timing of the initiative, stating that it aims to ensure pollution-free water bodies in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season. The campaign incorporates extensive awareness activities to educate residents about the importance of maintaining clean waterways.

Public Appeal and Community Participation

In a direct appeal to the citizens of Dehradun, Commissioner Bansal urged cooperation from all residents. "Our appeal to the citizens is not to throw rubbish, plastic or construction debris in rivers, drains and public places, and to cooperate with the administration in keeping the city's water bodies clean. Building a clean, healthy, and beautiful Dehradun is possible only with the participation of citizens," she stated.

The administration highlighted that community involvement is essential for the long-term success of the campaign, reinforcing that civic responsibility plays a pivotal role in environmental conservation.

Initial Cleanup Operations and Machinery Deployment

The first phase of the drive has already commenced with cleanup operations targeting key areas including:

  • Sattowali Valley
  • Bhandari Bagh
  • Banks of the Rispana river

To facilitate these efforts, the municipal corporation deployed heavy machinery such as earthmovers and tractor-trolleys to remove large volumes of accumulated debris. Officials reported that municipal solid waste and plastic waste were the primary pollutants extracted during these operations. The removal process has been carefully managed to reduce pollution levels while preserving the natural flow of the rivers.

Recognition of Sanitation Workers

In a notable gesture, the campaign also served as an occasion to honor the dedication of sanitation workers. Coinciding with International Women's Day, Mayor Thapliyal and Commissioner Bansal felicitated the municipal corporation's chief sanitation inspector and female sanitation workers, acknowledging their significant contributions to maintaining urban cleanliness.

This recognition underscores the vital role that sanitation personnel play in environmental initiatives and public health, particularly in the context of large-scale cleanup drives.

Campaign Duration and Broader Implications

The "100 Days One Mission – Reviving Our Rivers" campaign is scheduled to run continuously for the next three months, with ongoing assessments and adjustments to maximize effectiveness. By addressing both immediate pollution and fostering long-term behavioral change among residents, the DMC aims to create a sustainable model for river conservation that could inspire similar efforts in other cities.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in Dehradun's environmental governance, aligning with national cleanliness goals while addressing local ecological challenges.
