Meghalaya Chief Minister Unveils Major Urban Development Push in Tura

In a significant boost to urban infrastructure in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Nehru Ading Locality Beautification Project at Hawakhana in Tura, the headquarters of West Garo Hills district, on Saturday. The event, organized by the Nehru Ading Development and Welfare Committee, marked the launch of multiple high-value development initiatives aimed at transforming Tura town.

Massive Rs 700 Crore Investment for Tura's Transformation

Addressing the gathering, CM Sangma revealed that development projects worth over Rs 700 crore are currently underway for the comprehensive development of Tura town. This substantial investment underscores the state government's commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

The Chief Minister detailed several key components of the Smart City Mission implementation in Tura:

  • An allocation of Rs 60 crore for paving internal roads across various localities to improve connectivity and mobility.
  • Phase-I expenditure of Rs 15 crore already utilized for street lighting and beautification works.
  • An additional Rs 15 crore sanctioned specifically for the beautification of Tura Bazar, a commercial hub.

Comprehensive City Beautification and Security Enhancement

The CM highlighted the ongoing city beautification drive, which includes the installation of approximately 350 CCTV cameras and 500 street lights throughout Tura. This dual approach addresses both aesthetic improvements and security enhancement simultaneously.

"Airports, five star hotels, road connectivity, CCTV networks and street lighting are all important and crucial for building the ecosystem required to take Tura to the next level," emphasized Sangma, who represents the South Tura assembly constituency.

Community Participation and Civic Responsibility

Beyond infrastructure, the Chief Minister stressed the vital role of community participation in maintaining civic discipline and cleanliness. He drew inspiration from international examples, specifically citing Japan's model of responsible citizen behavior as a benchmark for Tura's residents to emulate.

The comprehensive development plan aims to create a more livable, secure, and aesthetically pleasing urban environment while fostering a sense of shared responsibility among citizens for maintaining public spaces.
