Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Proposes Major Recruitment Drive to Fill Over 270 Permanent Positions
In a significant move to tackle a severe staffing crisis, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has launched a major recruitment campaign aimed at hiring more than 270 permanent employees. This initiative seeks to address a critical shortage that has left approximately 60% of sanctioned roles vacant, adversely impacting public service delivery across the city.
Urgent Need to Fill Vacancies
The civic body has formally submitted a proposal to the Union Territory administration, requesting approval to advertise these posts. If approved, this recruitment drive will mark the first substantial permanent hiring exercise since 2021. Internal records reveal a staggering vacancy rate, with 3,767 out of 5,611 sanctioned positions currently unfilled.
In a letter to the local government department, the MC emphasized that these vacancies are "adversely affecting day-to-day operations and delivery of public services." The authority highlighted the essential role of permanent staff in ensuring the smooth functioning of key wings, including engineering, fire services, and health departments.
Transparent Recruitment Process
The proposed intake of 272 personnel spans various levels of government service, with the majority of roles designated for administrative and emergency services. To ensure transparency and prevent internal interference, the Municipal Corporation has outsourced the entire examination and selection process.
The University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS) at Panjab University will serve as the recruiting agency. A senior official confirmed, "The MC will not play any role in this entire exercise," noting that once final approval is granted, Panjab University will independently handle advertisements and testing.
Historical Context and Future Outlook
The last major recruitment drive in 2021 aimed to fill 170 permanent positions, a process that took over a year to complete. Authorities are now hopeful that the current proposal will be fast-tracked to alleviate mounting pressure on existing staff and enhance city-wide service delivery.
This recruitment push underscores the MC's commitment to improving operational efficiency and public welfare in Chandigarh, as it navigates the challenges posed by extensive staffing gaps.
