Assam's Longest Flyover to Open in Guwahati, Honoring 13th-Century Ruler Maharaja Prithu

Guwahati is poised to witness a significant infrastructure milestone as Assam's longest flyover, named after the 13th-century Kamarupa ruler Maharaja Prithu, is scheduled for inauguration on Tuesday. This 5.4-kilometer-long structure represents a major advancement in the city's urban development and traffic management systems.

Strategic Intersection and Temporary Decorative Structure

The newly constructed flyover intersects with the existing Anandaram Barua flyover at Chandmari, a crucial junction in Guwahati. At this intersection point, authorities have installed a temporary lotus-shaped structure specifically for the opening ceremony. This decorative element adds a ceremonial touch to the inauguration while serving as a visual landmark for the event.

Sanjiv Shyam, Chief Engineer of PWD (roads), confirmed the project's completion status, stating, "The flyover is complete and all set for inauguration on March 10. The flower-shaped structure at the roundabout at the intersection point of the bridges is temporary. No fountain will be installed as it is not feasible."

Historical Significance and Future Plans

The flyover's naming honors Maharaja Prithu, a historical figure renowned for defeating Turko-Afghan invader Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1206. According to Shyam, there are potential plans to place a statue of Maharaja Prithu at the roundabout in the future, pending government approval and decision-making processes.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma previously highlighted the historical context during discussions about the naming on January 29. He noted that historical evidence of Maharaja Prithu's resistance against Muslim invasion can be found in North Guwahati, emphasizing how the ruler resisted the first Muslim invasion in the region, with Ahom General Lachit Borphukan ultimately defeating them in the Battle of Saraighat.

Final Preparations and Complementary Infrastructure Developments

As of Sunday, finishing touches were being applied to the flyover, with some minor work remaining underneath the structure. Officials assure that all pending work will be completed before the inauguration ceremony, ensuring the flyover is fully operational for public use.

In related infrastructure news, vehicular movement has commenced on the Kumar Bhaskar Verma bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14. This development complements the new flyover project, collectively enhancing Guwahati's transportation network and connectivity across the region.

The Anandaram Barua flyover, which connects to RG Baruah Road, will now interface with the new Maharaja Prithu flyover, creating an integrated transportation corridor designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility in one of Assam's most important urban centers.
