Outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has categorically refused to resign following her party's defeat in the 2026 assembly elections, asserting that the Trinamool Congress achieved a 'moral victory' despite the official outcome. Addressing a press conference, she leveled serious allegations against the Election Commission, accusing it of acting in a biased manner throughout the electoral process.
Allegations of Irregularities
Banerjee claimed that the election result was heavily influenced by force and that large-scale irregularities occurred during counting. She stated that mandates in several constituencies were 'looted' and that counting was deliberately slowed to manipulate the outcome. 'Our fight was not against the BJP but against the Election Commission,' she declared, vowing not to step down under pressure.
Moral Victory Claim
The TMC supremo maintained that her party had won the election 'morally' and that the actual verdict was being subverted. She emphasized that the Trinamool Congress would continue to fight for the people of West Bengal and would not accept the legitimacy of the results as declared.
Banerjee's refusal to resign marks a dramatic escalation in post-election tensions in the state, where the BJP is poised to form the next government. The Election Commission has not yet responded to her allegations.
