Kerala Fisherman Rescued After 36-Hour Ordeal at Sea by Coast Guard

In a dramatic maritime rescue operation, a fisherman who had been missing at sea for over 36 hours was successfully saved by the Indian Coast Guard off the coast of Kerala on Wednesday. The coordinated search and rescue mission highlights the critical role of maritime safety protocols in safeguarding lives along India's coastline.

Details of the Rescue Operation

The rescued individual has been identified as Ranjumoni Sonowal, aged 40, a crew member of the mechanized fishing vessel Zion, which is registered in Tamil Nadu. According to Coast Guard officials, Sonowal went missing on Monday night while the vessel was returning from routine fishing operations in the Arabian Sea.

The incident occurred approximately 27 kilometers off the coast of Kochi, where the fisherman was discovered drifting alone without access to food or water. He was located and rescued by the Coast Guard Ship Arnvesh, which promptly transferred him to the vessel's medical room for immediate emergency care.

Medical Condition and Response

Upon rescue, officials reported that Sonowal was in a critical state, suffering from severe dehydration and hypothermia due to prolonged exposure to the harsh marine environment. After receiving initial stabilization on board, he was provided with further medical attention to address his condition.

Subsequently, the fisherman was shifted to a hospital onshore for a detailed medical examination and ongoing treatment. The swift medical intervention played a crucial role in ensuring his recovery from the life-threatening situation.

Coordinated Search Efforts

The rescue operation was initiated after the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai and the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Kochi received information about the missing fisherman on Tuesday. Authorities immediately launched a comprehensive search operation to locate him.

To intensify the efforts, a Coast Guard ship that was already on patrol in the area was diverted to the search zone. Additionally, an aircraft sortie was deployed to cover a wider area and enhance the chances of locating the missing individual.

The fisherman was finally located and rescued around 11:45 AM on Wednesday, marking the successful conclusion of the intensive search. Coast Guard officials emphasized that the swift and coordinated response was instrumental in ensuring his safe recovery, underscoring the effectiveness of India's maritime rescue infrastructure.

Importance of Maritime Safety

This incident serves as a reminder of the perils faced by fishermen and maritime workers, highlighting the need for robust safety measures and prompt emergency responses. The successful rescue operation demonstrates the commitment of the Indian Coast Guard to protecting lives at sea through advanced coordination and rapid deployment of resources.
