Air India Crash Victims' Families Stage Protest in Ahmedabad, Demand Black Box Data Release
In a poignant demonstration on Sindhu Bhavan Road in Ahmedabad, approximately 15 families who lost loved ones in the Air India AI171 aircraft crash gathered on Saturday to demand authorities release crucial investigation data. The families are specifically calling for the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) information from the fatal June 2023 accident to be made public.
Families Seek Answers and Closure Through Transparency
The grieving relatives submitted a formal letter addressed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with copies marked to Union Civil Aviation Minister, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. In their correspondence, the families made a heartfelt appeal for greater transparency in the ongoing investigation and requested access to the black box data that could provide critical insights into the crash's causes.
Kuldeep Gadhavi, a social worker associated with a support group for the victims' families, revealed that nearly ten months have passed since the tragedy with minimal communication from authorities. "The investigation continues, but families remain uninformed about progress. Their desperation for answers and closure has compelled this collective action to seek clarity," Gadhavi explained to gathered media representatives.
Multiple Concerns Beyond Black Box Data
In their detailed letter, family members articulated several pressing concerns:
- Understanding the crash's exact cause, including potential technical malfunctions
- Accessing black box data to comprehend their loved ones' final moments
- Ensuring proper accountability for the tragedy
- Using such information to prevent similar future accidents
The families emphasized that if official public disclosure proves impossible, the data should at minimum be shared with affected relatives. Beyond the black box issue, they raised significant concerns about difficulties retrieving personal belongings from the crash site.
Challenges in Belongings Retrieval Process
Several relatives reported that their attempts to contact authorities through phone calls and emails frequently go unanswered. Some family members expressed discomfort with email-only communication channels, requesting functional helplines for proper assistance. Others described the emotionally distressing process of identifying personal items among approximately 23,000 recovered pieces of crash debris as overwhelming and inadequately supported.
While acknowledging receipt of stipulated monetary compensation, the families stressed that financial relief cannot substitute for answers, accountability, or emotional closure. They maintain that only through greater transparency and meaningful engagement from authorities can they achieve the resolution they desperately seek nearly a year after losing their loved ones.
