In a significant humanitarian effort, five women from Punjab who were stranded and facing distress in Oman have been safely brought back to India. The successful repatriation mission was spearheaded by renowned environmentalist and social activist Balbir Singh Seechewal, who intervened after receiving desperate pleas for help.
The Plight of the Stranded Women
The group of women, identified as Manpreet Kaur, Ramandeep Kaur, and Sukhwinder Kaur from Jalandhar district, along with Kulwinder Kaur from Kapurthala and another from Hoshiarpur district, had traveled to Oman in search of employment opportunities. They were reportedly working as domestic helpers. However, their situation quickly deteriorated, and they found themselves in dire circumstances, effectively trapped without a way to return home.
Their families back in Punjab, growing increasingly worried, reached out to Balbir Singh Seechewal for assistance. Seechewal, who is widely respected for his community service beyond his environmental work, immediately took up their case. He utilized his contacts and influence to escalate the matter to the highest levels of government.
Seechewal's Decisive Intervention
Understanding the urgency, Balbir Singh Seechewal directly contacted the Indian Embassy in Muscat and also raised the issue with Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar. He presented a detailed memorandum outlining the women's precarious situation and appealed for swift action to ensure their safe return. This high-level advocacy proved crucial in cutting through bureaucratic red tape.
The coordinated efforts between Seechewal, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and the Indian mission in Oman set a rapid repatriation process in motion. Officials worked to resolve the legal and logistical hurdles that were holding the women back. Thanks to this pressure, the necessary clearances were obtained, and arrangements for their travel were finalized.

The five women finally landed on Indian soil, marking the end of their ordeal. Their return was met with immense relief and joy by their families, who had been living in a state of constant anxiety. This incident has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by Indian workers, especially women, who seek employment abroad, sometimes falling prey to unscrupulous agents and exploitative conditions.
