Himachal Welcomes New Year with Snowfall & Tourist Rush; Shimla Gears Up
Snowfall in Himachal, Tourist Influx Peaks for New Year

Himachal Pradesh ushered in the New Year period with picturesque light snowfall in its high-altitude regions and a massive influx of holidaymakers, creating a vibrant yet crowded atmosphere in its popular hill stations. While the state capital, Shimla, remained under a cloudy sky on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, the scenic transformation in the upper hills set a perfect wintry backdrop for the celebrations.

Tourist Influx and Weather Update

Authorities reported that thousands of tourists have entered Himachal over the past two days, leading to a significant boost in hotel occupancy and crowded scenes at major destinations. The tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti witnessed the season's first December snowfall in Kokhsar on Wednesday, much to the delight of visitors.

According to the Meteorological Department, the weather pattern is set to become more active. Light to moderate rain or snowfall is likely at a few places on December 31 and at many places on January 1, 2026. Isolated spells of light rain or snow may also occur on January 2, 5, and 6. The rest of the week is expected to remain dry.

The IMD also forecast a notable dip in temperatures. Minimum temperatures are likely to fall by 4–7°C in mid and high hill areas and by 3–5°C in low hills and plains over the next two days, before rising gradually by 3–5°C. Maximum temperatures are expected to drop by 3–5°C across many parts of the state in the next three to four days.

Rainfall Deficit and Shimla's Grand Plans

Despite the upcoming snowy spell, the state has recorded a 99 per cent deficient rainfall between December 1 and 30, with only 0.2 mm of rain against a normal of 36.2 mm. However, this has not dampened the festive spirit in Shimla.

Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan stated that the capital is fully prepared for New Year celebrations. "Festivities are planned till midnight at the historic Ridge," he said. Cultural programmes under the Winter Carnival will continue till 12 night, followed by DJ nights. Since afternoon, tourists and locals had begun gathering in large numbers at The Mall Road and the Ridge.

To entertain the crowds, at least five small band parties, including folk artists and police band teams, were stationed at different locations. A wide space before The Town Hall was specially earmarked for mass dance and the traditional Himachali natti.

Security Arrangements and Traffic Management

Ensuring safety and smooth movement in the crowded town, the police have made extensive arrangements. Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi confirmed that over 400 police personnel, including traffic cops, have been deputed to maintain law and order. The personnel are managing key areas like the Ridge, The Mall Road, Chaura Maidan, Summer Hill, Sanjauli, Chhota Shimla, Kufri, and other popular spots in the district.

The combination of festive cheer, enhanced security, and the promise of more winter weather is setting the stage for a memorable New Year's welcome in the hills of Himachal Pradesh.
