Kedarnath Helicopter Services Delayed, Leaving Pilgrims Stranded

Helicopter services to the revered Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand faced significant delays on Wednesday, stranding hundreds of frustrated pilgrims at key locations including Sirsi, Phata, and Guptkashi. The disruption was attributed to technical issues at the helipad, coinciding with the opening day of the Kedarnath temple, which marks the start of the pilgrimage season.

Morning Chaos and Cancellations

The services were scheduled to commence at 6 am, but pilgrims who arrived early were informed that operations had not begun. As a result, bookings for the 6 am–9 am and 9 am–12 noon slots were cancelled and refunded, adding to the inconvenience for many devotees. An aviation company operator explained that mandatory markings on the helipad could not be completed earlier due to heavy snowfall last week. Once these markings were finalized, helicopter services resumed around 1:30 pm.

Pilgrims Voice Frustration Over Negligence

Rewant Mishra, a 48-year-old advocate from Kanpur, traveled nearly 750 km with friends Amit Srivastava from Fatehpur and Peeyush Tripathi to reach Phata a day earlier. They had booked a 6 am slot for the Kedarnath shuttle. Mishra expressed his dismay, stating, "We understand weather-related disruptions in the mountains, but if the helipad was not ready, tickets should not have been sold in advance." He labeled the situation as "gross negligence" on the part of authorities.

Mishra also highlighted financial concerns, noting that while the ticket amount was refunded, the convenience fee of ₹1,062 was non-refundable. "There were many elderly pilgrims waiting helplessly. The situation could have been handled in a better way," he added, emphasizing the lack of preparedness.

Resumption of Services and Coordination Gaps

Helicopter operations did resume later in the afternoon, but passengers affected by the morning cancellations were left scrambling for alternatives. This incident underscores significant gaps in coordination and preparedness at the onset of the pilgrimage season, raising questions about the management of such critical services in remote areas.

The delays have sparked concerns over the handling of pilgrim logistics, particularly for elderly and vulnerable travelers, as authorities work to address these issues moving forward.
