Ahmedabad Flower Show Faces Visitor Slump Amid Pricing and Management Concerns
The Ahmedabad International Flower Show, a prominent annual event organized by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), concluded its 2026 edition with disappointing results. Held at the Sabarmati Riverfront Flower Park from January 1 to 29, the show experienced a notable decline in attendance, raising concerns among organizers and local authorities.
Sharp Drop in Visitor Numbers and Revenue
This year's event attracted approximately 1.1 million visitors, a significant decrease of 200,000 compared to the previous year. In 2025, the show ran from January 3 to 26 and drew over 1.3 million attendees. The financial performance also reflected this downturn. The AMC invested Rs 17 crore in the 2026 edition but generated only Rs 11.67 crore in revenue, resulting in a substantial shortfall. In contrast, the 2025 show cost Rs 13.05 crore and earned Rs 15.10 crore, demonstrating a more favorable outcome.
High Ticket Prices Blamed for Deterring Crowds
A primary factor behind the reduced turnout appears to be the increased entry fees. For the 2026 show, weekday tickets were priced at Rs 80 for individuals above 12 years, while weekend entry cost Rs 100. These rates proved prohibitive for many potential visitors, contributing to the lower footfall. Additionally, the AMC introduced a special VVIP category for the 9pm to 10pm slot, but due to poor interest, this arrangement was discontinued midway through the event.
Management and Logistical Challenges Add to Woes
Sources indicate that high ticket prices were not the only deterrent. Poor management led to significant inconvenience for attendees, who were forced to walk 1 to 2 kilometres after parking their vehicles. This logistical issue further discouraged participation, especially among families and elderly visitors. The AMC had anticipated 1.5 million visitors for the 2026 edition, but the actual turnout fell well short of expectations.
Revenue Breakdown and Future Plans
Devang Dani, chairman of the standing committee, provided a detailed revenue breakdown for the 2026 show. Total earnings included Rs 8.41 crore from entry fees, Rs 1.56 crore from stall rentals, Rs 1.40 crore from sponsorships, and Rs 24 lakh from billboard advertisements. Despite the extended duration of 29 days, the overall performance was underwhelming. In response, there is a strong possibility that entry fees will be reduced for next year's event to attract more visitors. Furthermore, the plants from the show will be relocated for display on central verges and in various city gardens, ensuring their continued use and visibility.
The Ahmedabad International Flower Show's 2026 edition highlights the delicate balance between generating revenue and ensuring accessibility for the public. As the AMC reviews its strategies, the focus will likely shift towards more affordable pricing and improved logistical arrangements to revive interest in this cherished community event.
