Dhubri District Hosts Dual Cultural Celebrations
The historic Dhubri district in Assam came alive with vibrant cultural festivities this week, showcasing two distinct traditional celebrations that highlight the region's rich heritage.
Ramraikuti Satra's 500-Year-Old Dol Utsav
The 500-year-old Ramraikuti Satra at Satrasal celebrated Dol Utsav over two days with traditional fervor. This ancient Satra, located along the India-Bangladesh international border, holds significant historical importance as the site where the marriage of Coochbehar's Koch dynasty commander-in-chief Chilarai (Shuklyadwaj) to Bhubaneshwari Devi, niece of Srimanta Sankardev, was solemnized. Chilarai later established the Satra in honor of his younger brother, Ramrai.
Traditional Rituals and Community Participation
Each year, Dol Utsav at this historic site features a chariot constructed from various metals, carrying an idol of Lord Krishna while following Vaishnavism traditions. Satradhikar Jitendra Nath Pradhani explained that devotees from across Dhubri participated in the two-day rituals that began on Tuesday and concluded Wednesday evening. The celebrations included 'gayan' and 'bayan' performances by devotional singers and drummers, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere.
Nrityangan's Seventh Vasanta Utsav Celebration
Simultaneously, the socio-cultural organization Nrityangan organized the seventh Vasanta Utsav at Rajiv Gandhi Children's Park in Dhubri. This day-long program celebrated the advent of Spring with traditional enthusiasm.
Colorful Procession and Official Recognition
The festivities commenced with a vibrant procession featuring cultural troupes from all communities, flagged off by Assam IGP (border) Debajyoti Mukherjee at Dhubri Kalibari. During the cultural event, Mukherjee praised Nrityangan's initiative to preserve tradition while maintaining essential elements of devotion and culture.
Dipankar Majumder, convenor of Vasanta Utsav 2026, emphasized his ongoing efforts to safeguard this Spring-associated festivity's traditions. The event successfully brought together diverse community groups to celebrate seasonal change through cultural expression.
