Assam Chief Minister Immerses in Devotion at Historic Barpeta Satra During Doul Utsav

The historic Barpeta Satra, situated approximately 95 kilometers west of Guwahati, radiated with centuries of spiritual energy as it celebrated the second day of Doul Utsav. This 443-year-old institution, founded by Mahapurush Madhabdev, was adorned in vibrant festive colors, its ancient corridors echoing with devotion and tradition.

CM Sarma's Spiritual Journey and Festive Reflections

Amidst the resonant rhythms of kirtan and traditional Holi Geets, accompanied by the fragrant aroma of fresh abir, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma entered the sacred grounds. With folded hands, he offered prayers to Koila Baba (Sri Krishna), immersing himself in the living tapestry of faith that has been preserved at the Satra for generations.

"Visiting the Barpeta Satra during Doul Utsav is an experience unlike any other," Sarma remarked. "The place fills you with an unexplainable surge of energy. Every Holi, I make it a point to visit the Satra — drawn back by its spirit, its warmth, and the devotion that lingers in the air." He added, "There’s no bigger joy than celebrating festivals with your family, and when it’s Holi, it has to be in Barpeta."

Government Plans for Global Promotion of Holi Geet

The Chief Minister revealed that his administration has ambitious plans to elevate Barpeta's iconic Holi Geet to the world stage, following the successful global showcases of cultural forms like Bihu dance, Jhumoir of the tea tribe community, and Bagurumba dance of the Bodo community. "I have a plan to promote Barpeta’s iconic 'Holi Geet' on the world platform," Sarma stated. "But we cannot proceed with that initiative now as assembly elections are approaching. Therefore, concrete steps will be initiated after the elections."

The Rich Heritage and Evolution of Barpeta Satra

Over centuries, Barpeta Satra has evolved into a prominent center of Neo-Vaishnavism, renowned for its:

  • Kirtanghar (prayer hall)
  • Sattriya dance traditions
  • Borgeet (devotional songs)
  • Bhaona (traditional theatrical performances)

It hosts grand festivals such as Raasleela and Doul Utsav, which attract thousands of devotees annually. Here, Holi transcends mere celebration; it embodies heritage, devotion, and a rhythmic legacy passed down through generations.

Historical Roots of Doul Utsav at Barpeta Satra

The festival has been observed at Barpeta Satra for the past 443 years, carrying a unique legacy. While Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva first introduced Doul Utsav at the Bordowa Satra, it was Shree Shree Mathura Das Bura Ata who brought the celebration to Barpeta. After assuming the role of Bura Satriya in 1595 AD, he organized the inaugural Doul Utsav within the Barpeta Satra premises in 1596 AD, establishing a tradition that continues to thrive with unparalleled devotion and splendor.
