Divya Dutta, who was last seen in JioHotstar's web series 'Chiraiya' as Kamlesh, talks about how the series puts the spotlight on marital rape at a time when there is no law against it, the fashion blunders she made, and how she makes sure to break the herd mentality, among other things.
On 'Chiraiya' and Marital Rape
When asked about her first reaction to the script of 'Chiraiya', Dutta said that the immediate thought was that it is a well-written script. She realized it brings in an important and relevant subject that needs to be spoken about. Her role as Kamlesh was fabulous, and any actor would wait for such a role. The transition of the protagonist from being conditioned to breaking off and standing for what is right made her say yes to the project.
Love for Kamlesh
Dutta shared that she cannot describe the love she is receiving for Kamlesh. The character starts as a woman blissfully unaware of what lies within and transforms into someone completely different. When Kamlesh stands up for what is right, people start relating to her. The overwhelming support includes notes saying 'Thank you for playing Kamlesh' and comparisons to superheroes like Superman and Batman.
Impact on Personal Views
Dutta became more conscious of the different thought processes people grow up with. She realized that it is not always about launching a rebellion but making society equal with respect, love, and most importantly, consent. This applies to everything, not just intimacy.
Choice of Projects
Dutta does not pressure herself as an actor. She prefers distinct and diverse roles. Kamlesh has created momentum for that, but for her next project, she wants to do something different. She has done vulnerable and negative roles and now wants to do comedy to laugh it off a bit.
Learning to Say No
Dutta realized early on to work with people she connects with. She follows her vibes and knows when not to do something. Even if something worked well, she would not keep repeating it. She is flooded with offers similar to Kamlesh but is not taking any because she prefers a director who sees her differently or has a different story to tell. Having a herd mentality is easy, but breaking it off is the real challenge.
Challenges in the Industry
Dutta faced issues because she looked very young and childlike initially. However, she found her niche with 'Train to Pakistan' and from there, the rest is history. She noted that in the industry, one gets objectified, but eventually everyone finds their way. One needs to stop caring about others' opinions, and then people stop criticizing.
Change in Storytelling
Dutta believes that the industry has started seeing actors beyond their looks. With OTT platforms, more realistic storytelling has emerged. Casting directors and proper scripts are now common. People prefer relatable actors, and even in larger-than-life movies, there is a shift toward relatability.
Fashion Evolution
Dutta's outfits are a conscious choice and represent her personality. Her designers know her well. She has learned the art of mixing and matching over the years. When she was new, she followed trends to fit in, but later realized her calling was different. With confidence, people noticed her and appreciated her style. She has been awarded the Icon Award for her fashion sense.
Fashion Philosophy
For Dutta, fashion means feeling intrinsically happy when looking in the mirror. Whether it is basic outwear or something unexpected, if she feels good, she wears it. Carrying anything with a smile and attitude makes it fashion.
Rapport with Manoj Bajpayee
Dutta shared a selfie with Manoj Bajpayee on his birthday. She is extremely fond of him and considers him the finest actor. She likes to express admiration for people she works with. Working with him makes heavy scenes feel effortless.
Upcoming Projects
Dutta has a film with Neeraj Pandey, another with Rana Daggubati, a romantic film with Jimmy Shergill, and a biopic with Neeraj Ghaywan.
