In a surprising revelation just a day before the theatrical debut of the much-anticipated spy action film Dhurandhar, veteran actor Rakesh Bedi has confirmed that a sequel is already in the pipeline and could hit screens very soon.
Sequel Confirmed and Nearing Completion
During a recent interview, Bedi disclosed that Dhurandhar Part 2 is not just a concept but a finished product awaiting final touches. "The second instalment is around the corner, it is ready and will be released in a month or two," the actor stated. He elaborated that while his screen time is limited in the first part, his character—a politician with a dual nature—will have a significantly expanded and pivotal role in the follow-up film.
Bedi, who plays a character inspired by a real-life Pakistani politician, described his role as both "endearing and menacing." He also shared the backstory of his casting, revealing that director Aditya Dhar, impressed by his performance in URI: The Surgical Strike, had promised future collaboration. This promise materialized in January 2024 when Bedi was offered the part in Dhurandhar.
A Film Making Headlines for Scale and Controversy
Starring Ranveer Singh in the lead, Dhurandhar has been a talking point for its grand scale, ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and debutante Sara Arjun, and its substantial runtime. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared the film with an 'A' certificate and a runtime of 3 hours and 34 minutes, making it the longest Bollywood release in 17 years.
However, the project also faced legal challenges. The makers were accused of basing the narrative on the life of decorated Army Officer, Late Major Mohit Sharma. Director Aditya Dhar has clarified that while the story of a spy moving between countries may draw inspiration, it is not a biographical account of the late officer. Commenting on the controversy, Rakesh Bedi said, "Every story comes from an inspiration... Dhurandhar may be inspired by it, but it's not based on it."
What's Next for the Spy Franchise?
With the first part scheduled for release on December 5, the confirmation of a sequel ready for a swift turnaround is a strategic move likely to build sustained audience interest. Bedi confirmed that the filming for Part 2 is complete, and the team is currently occupied with post-production work. "Part 2 has been shot, they are just working on its post-production, it will be released in a couple of months at the most," he affirmed.
Produced by B62 Productions and Jio Studios, the Dhurandhar franchise is poised to be a major two-part spectacle in Indian cinema. The quick succession planned for the second part's release indicates the makers' confidence in the material and their strategy to capitalize on the momentum generated by the first film's launch.
