Musical Legend Ilaiyaraaja Declares 'I Don't Know Music' While Honored at Film Festival
In a humble revelation that underscores his lifelong dedication, musical genius Ilaiyaraaja has stated that he is still learning the art of music, despite an enormous career spanning over five decades since 1968. The Padma Bhushan awardee, who has composed for a staggering 1,541 films, made these remarks while speaking at the 11th Ajanta Ellora International Film Festival, held at the MGM campus in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
A Philosophy of Perpetual Learning
Ilaiyaraaja told the audience, "I don't know music," explaining that this mindset is precisely why he continues to work every day. He believes that if he ever felt he knew everything about music, he would have stopped composing long ago. Learning, he emphasized, is what fuels his creative fire and sustains his remarkable journey in the industry. When asked how he manages to create so many tunes, he repeated his famous line, adding that change constantly brings new opportunities to learn, keeping his passion alive.
The Enduring Power of Live Orchestra
Reflecting on the evolution of music, Ilaiyaraaja noted that when he began his career around 1968, the landscape was vastly different with no advanced technology. Today, while keyboards and electronic tools have made music production easier, he remains committed to recording with a live orchestra. "I write down the notations for every single instrument," he said, highlighting his meticulous approach. Although not opposed to electronic instruments, he asserted that the true emotion in music can only emerge through live performances, preserving the authenticity and depth that technology often lacks.
Recognition at the AIFF Event
At the festival, Ilaiyaraaja was honored with the prestigious Padmapani Award, presented by AIFF Chairperson Nandkishore Kagliwal, MGM University Chancellor Ankushrao Kadam, and Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty. This accolade adds to his long list of achievements, celebrating his contributions to Indian cinema and music.
Looking Ahead: New Symphonic Ventures
In related news, last year during Diwali 2025, Ilaiyaraaja announced via social media that he is working on a new symphony and a musical venture titled "Symphonic Dances." In a video message, he shared, "On this festive occasion of Diwali, I wanted to convey that I will begin work on my next symphony. Along with that, I am working on a new musical venture, Symphonic Dances." This indicates that even after decades of success, his creative spirit remains undiminished, with exciting projects on the horizon.
Ilaiyaraaja's journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that true mastery lies in continuous learning and adaptation. His dedication to live music and humble outlook ensure his legacy as one of India's greatest composers endures, resonating with audiences and aspiring musicians alike.
