Dharwad District Schools Implement Mandatory 'Water Bell' for Student Hydration

The School Education and Literacy Department in Karnataka's Dharwad district has launched a comprehensive initiative to ensure students maintain proper hydration throughout the school day. All government schools in the district are now required to implement a 'water bell' system, where a bell rings at specific intervals to remind children to drink water.

Reviving and Strengthening the Hydration Initiative

This directive, originally issued years ago but not effectively implemented, was recently reinforced with a fresh order on January 14. The renewed push comes after health experts emphasized that regular water intake is crucial for children's growth, health, and cognitive function. Drinking water helps regulate body temperature, aids digestion, and supports overall physical development.

SM Hudedamani, deputy project coordinator of Rashtriya Mashyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, confirmed that the department issued a circular to systematically implement this hydration reminder system across schools. "Children should drink water for health and growth. They are engaged in play and practice activities at school. This system was created to remind them to drink water," he explained.

Operational Details and Community Support

The water bell is scheduled to ring four times daily: at 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM. This applies to all government, aided, and unaided schools, including those with LKG and UKG classes. Approximately 850 government schools in Dharwad district are currently using the bell sound to prompt students.

Following the implementation, several organizations stepped forward to support the initiative. The Lions Club of Hubballi city, among others, distributed water bottles free of cost to students, encouraging them to bring bottles regularly. Maruthi Bhajantri, incharge headmaster of Government HPS in Chalamatti, noted that all 147 students (grades 1 to 8) received bottles, and the school has adequate drinking water facilities. "It is sunny now. If children drink water frequently, they will be cheerful, take interest in activities, and maintain good health," he stated.

Monitoring and Educational Emphasis

To ensure compliance, officials have instructed Block Resource Persons (BRPs) and Cluster Resource Persons (CRPs) to monitor the water bell's implementation. DDPI Shanamuk Swamy Keladimath highlighted the importance of hydration, comparing it to food for a healthy life. "Children should drink a fixed amount of water every day for their health and development. However, they often lack proper awareness about drinking water. Therefore, water bells ring every 2 hours in all government schools to remind them regularly," he said.

This proactive measure aims to instill healthy hydration habits in students, addressing concerns that children might neglect water intake during busy school hours. By integrating this simple yet effective reminder system, the Dharwad district education department is taking a significant step toward promoting student well-being and academic engagement through better health practices.
