Mass Cheating Scandal Erupts on First Day of Maharashtra HSC Exams

The commencement of the Maharashtra State Board's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations on Tuesday was marred by a significant case of mass copying at Rashtriya Madhyamik Vidyalaya in Kannad taluka, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This incident has resulted in immediate legal and disciplinary actions against the examination staff on duty.

FIR and Suspensions for Examination Supervisors

Education officer (secondary) Ashwini Latkar confirmed that an FIR is being filed against 16 supervisors, the centre head, two members of the sitting squad, and a runner. All these individuals are set to be suspended by Wednesday, marking a swift response to the breach of examination integrity.

Acting chairperson of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Nandkumar Bedse, stated that a formal inquiry into the incident has been initiated. He emphasized that action against the students involved will also be taken as per the board's rules and regulations.

Discovery of Cheating and Evidence Collection

The cheating was uncovered when Latkar, during random supervision, noticed suspicious activity at the centre. Upon investigation, she found students with photocopies of answers and others sitting in close proximity to cheat. CCTV camera footage from the school was reviewed and taken into custody as crucial evidence.

Bedse highlighted that the state board has implemented strict measures to prevent such malpractices, and this case demonstrates their commitment to exposing violations. The centre, which had 327 students appearing for the English exam, will be assigned new staff to supervise the remaining exams starting Wednesday.

Latkar noted that this was not initially classified as a sensitive centre. The suspicious activity was observed in three classrooms, with dubious conduct also noted in others. The supervisors and invigilators involved were teachers from both within the school and external appointments.

Additional Incidents Under Scrutiny

In a separate development, drone footage showing people near the windows of an exam centre in Beed district went viral on Tuesday. This prompted the board to direct the relevant education officer to submit an investigation report.

Beed collector Vivek Johnson explained that the drone was operated by the district education department after reports of a crowd near the school. Initial checks indicated that all windows were closed, and CCTV footage from inside the classrooms did not show any cheating activity. The centre was not on the list of sensitive locations, but authorities have instructed a re-review of the footage to ensure no untoward behavior occurred.

Bedse added that the lack of a boundary wall around the school might have led to people gathering nearby, but no cheating was found upon inspection.

Further Malpractice Cases in Rural Jalna

In rural Jalna, official squads caught six students from three different exam centres—Jamkhed-Rohilagad, Ankushnagar, and Shahagad—engaging in malpractice. Ambad tehsildar Vijay Chavan reported that these students were caught red-handed during checks, underscoring the ongoing challenges in maintaining exam integrity across the state.

Over 15 lakh students from nine divisions—Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Latur, Amravati, Kolhapur, Konkan, and Nashik—appeared for the English paper from 11 am to 2 pm on Tuesday.

Board's Stern Warning to Candidates

Amid these incidents, MSBSHSE authorities reiterated their appeal to candidates to avoid unfair means during the examinations. They stressed that success or failure in HSC or any exam does not define one's life. Resorting to malpractice can be destructive in the long term, as it may hinder students from pursuing careers aligned with their true talents and inclinations.

The board's proactive measures and warnings aim to uphold the credibility of the examination process and ensure a fair environment for all students.
