The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-operated Mumbai Public Schools (MPS), which provide non-state-board curricula including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge, have witnessed an overwhelming response for admissions. A total of 4,047 applications have been submitted for merely 2,296 available seats across 22 MPS schools, highlighting the growing demand for alternative educational boards in the city.
Nursery Admissions Dominate Application Numbers
Most of the applications are concentrated on nursery admissions, which serve as the entry-level stage in the pre-primary section. This trend underscores the early interest parents are showing in securing spots for their children in these reputed institutions. In addition to nursery, seats are also open for Junior KG, Senior KG, and Class I, following the BMC education department's decision to enhance intake capacity at five schools.
Increased Seat Availability and Official Statement
The number of available seats has seen a significant rise from 1,242 last year to the current 2,296. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Education) Prachi Jambhekar commented on this development, stating, "We have received an overwhelming response for admissions. Children from all sections of society are seeking admission in BMC schools, which marks a positive step towards inclusive education. Based on space availability, we are striving to accommodate more children by adding additional sections. Our motto remains to provide free and quality education across all our schools."
Lottery System for Seat Allotment
Given that the number of applications far exceeds the available seats, the allotment process will be conducted through a lottery system. The procedure is outlined as follows:
- After thorough scrutiny of applications, a list of eligible candidates will be published on January 30.
- The lottery draw will take place between February 3 and 7.
- The final list of selected candidates will be announced on February 9.
- Admission formalities will be carried out at the respective schools from February 11 to 28.
- The academic year is scheduled to commence in April 2026.
Evolution of BMC's Educational Offerings
Historically, civic schools in Mumbai have primarily offered the Maharashtra State Board curriculum. However, a transformative shift occurred in 2020 when BMC schools were rebranded as Mumbai Public Schools. This rebranding initiative introduced non-state-board curricula, starting with one school each offering CBSE and ICSE. Over time, the BMC has expanded this initiative, and this year, a total of 22 MPS schools are providing these alternative curricula. The breakdown includes:
- 19 schools offering CBSE.
- 1 school offering ICSE.
- 1 school offering International Baccalaureate (IB).
- 1 school offering Cambridge curriculum.
This expansion reflects the BMC's commitment to diversifying educational options and catering to the varied preferences of parents and students in Mumbai, thereby enhancing the overall quality and accessibility of education in the region.
