IIT Madras Pravartak and SWAYAM Plus Collaborate to Offer Free AI Training for Rural Educators

In a significant move to bridge the digital divide in education, IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has partnered with SWAYAM Plus to launch a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Training program exclusively for rural school teachers across India. This initiative, announced recently, offers these courses at absolutely no cost to participants, marking a pivotal step towards empowering educators in remote areas.

Course Details and Registration Deadline

The program, titled 'AI for Educators – K12 Teachers' Certification Course, is designed for teachers handling classes from I to XII. Scheduled to commence on February 5, 2026, the course requires interested educators to register by January 31, 2026. Registrations can be completed through the official portal at iitmpravartak.org.in/AI_Educators_K12_teachers. This 40-hour training aims to equip teachers with essential skills to integrate AI into classroom teaching and learning effectively.

Program Structure and Learning Outcomes

According to a press release, the curriculum is meticulously crafted to help teachers confidently adopt AI tools and methodologies. The goal is to enhance learning outcomes while promoting inclusive and responsible use of technology in educational settings. The program includes:

  • An introductory session to set the foundation.
  • Eight modules covering a wide range of topics, such as:
    1. Generative AI tools and prompt engineering.
    2. Gamification and storytelling techniques.
    3. AI-based lesson planning and student engagement tools, including AR/VR and visualization.
    4. AI-enabled assessment methods and subject-specific use cases.
    5. Strategies for inclusive education and online teaching platforms.

This structured approach ensures that teachers gain practical insights into leveraging AI for diverse educational needs.

Assessment and Certification Process

Upon completion of the training, participants will undergo a post-course assessment in the form of an MCQ-based virtual proctored exam, administered by IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation. Those who successfully pass this assessment will receive a certificate issued by the foundation. Notably, the certification fee will be waived for the first 500 teachers from rural schools who complete the training, making it more accessible.

Eligibility and Language of Instruction

The course is specifically intended for teachers from rural schools across India. It will be conducted in English, with a total duration of 40 hours. The virtual, proctored mode of assessment ensures flexibility and reach, allowing educators from various regions to participate without geographical constraints.

Broader Impact and Recent Recognition

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance digital literacy in India's education sector. In a related development, IIT Madras director V Kamakoti recently received the Padma Shri award. Reflecting on this honor, he stated, "The Padma Shri Award means only one thing to me. That I will put all my best efforts towards 'Viksit Bharat @ 2047'. Whatever I have achieved is all because of collective effort, and I dedicate this award to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Jai Hind!" This sentiment underscores the collaborative spirit driving such educational advancements.

By providing free AI training, IIT Madras Pravartak and SWAYAM Plus are not only upskilling teachers but also fostering a more technologically adept generation of students in rural India.
