Goa Veterinary College Prepares Practical Training Infrastructure

The Goa College of Veterinary Science in Ponda is moving forward with plans to establish comprehensive livestock and poultry units ahead of its first academic year, scheduled to commence by mid-2026. This development marks a significant step toward creating a fully functional veterinary education facility within the state.

Directorate Issues Tender for Animal Supply

The directorate of animal husbandry and veterinary services (AHVS) has officially issued a tender inviting electronic bids for the supply of livestock and poultry required for the college. This procurement process is a critical component in setting up the necessary practical training infrastructure that will support hands-on veterinary education.

Comprehensive Units for Veterinary Training

According to AHVS officials, the college plans to establish four distinct units as part of its teaching and practical training infrastructure:

  • Poultry Unit
  • Dairy Unit
  • Goatery Unit
  • Piggery Unit

"These units are essential for hands-on veterinary education, research and clinical exposure for students," an official emphasized. "The establishment of functional dairy, poultry and livestock units will support academic training, contribute to applied research and extension activities."

High-Level Review and Statutory Requirements

Last month, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the readiness of the veterinary college and ensure it meets its mid-2026 launch target. Officials confirmed that setting up livestock and poultry units is a critical requirement under veterinary education norms and is necessary for securing statutory approvals from regulatory bodies.

Addressing Goa's Veterinary Education Gap

Currently, Goa lacks its own veterinary college, forcing students to seek professional training outside the state. The state government sponsors 11 students annually to pursue veterinary studies at three institutions in Maharashtra:

  1. Mumbai Veterinary College
  2. College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Parbhani
  3. Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science, Shirwal, Satara

These Maharashtra-based institutions typically begin their admission process between July and August, with the academic year commencing in September.

Reducing Dependence on Out-of-State Institutions

Once operational, the Goa College of Veterinary Science in Ponda is expected to significantly reduce the state's dependence on out-of-state institutions for veterinary education. The establishment of these practical training units represents a foundational step toward creating a self-sufficient veterinary education ecosystem within Goa, providing local students with enhanced opportunities for professional development in animal sciences.
