The two-day East Zone Vice-Chancellors’ Meet for the academic year 2025-26 successfully wrapped up at Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU) in Patna on Tuesday. The concluding session centered on the crucial theme of 'Promoting sustainability and social responsibility in higher education institutions', bringing together academic leaders to chart a future-ready path for universities.
AIU Leadership Charts Course for Sustainable Education
In a significant address, Dr. Pankaj Mittal, the Secretary General of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), outlined the pivotal role the apex body can play in driving sustainability and social responsibility initiatives. She supported her vision with practical, real-life examples, demonstrating actionable strategies for institutions. The AIU, established in 1925, is India's premier apex body in higher education and the world's second-oldest organization of its kind. It boasts a massive network of 1,175 member universities, which includes 20 international institutions.
Call for Quality, Innovation, and Reversing Educational Drain
Speaking at the event, AIU President and Vice-Chancellor Vinay Kumar Pathak emphasized the fundamental duties of higher education institutions. "It is our duty to promote quality education to all students irrespective of their financial condition," he stated. He urged Indian universities to focus on indigenous technical innovation, moving beyond being mere assembly hubs for foreign products. "We must match our competitors to stay relevant and achieve the 'Viksit Bharat' plans," Pathak added, highlighting the need for global competitiveness.
Rana Singh, Director of CIMP-Patna, commended the efforts of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and AKU VC Prof. Sharad Kumar Yadav in transforming the state's education landscape. He presented a compelling argument for the globalization of Indian education. "We must be prepared for the globalization of education and work to reverse the current trend by attracting foreign students, instead of sending our own pupils abroad in search of quality education," Singh said. He cited the example of IITs preparing to reverse the brain drain for education. Furthermore, he expressed optimism that Bihar could revive the legacy of Nalanda University, historically the world's first university.
Enriching Deliberations Mark a Vibrant Conclusion
Prof. Sharad Kumar Yadav, the Vice-Chancellor of the host university, Aryabhatta Knowledge University, noted that the high-level meet infused the campus with vibrant energy and enriching discussions. The conclave served as a significant platform for vice-chancellors from the eastern zone to align their strategies with national educational goals, focusing on sustainable practices, social accountability, and global positioning.
The event underscored a collective commitment to not only elevate the quality and accessibility of higher education in India but also to ensure it contributes meaningfully to societal well-being and environmental stewardship, in line with the broader vision of a developed nation.
