Hyderabad Unveils Rs 941 Crore Double-Decker Corridor to Tackle NH-65 Congestion
In a major infrastructure push, the Telangana government has announced plans to construct a double-decker elevated corridor between LB Nagar and Hayatnagar along the busy NH-65 route. This ambitious project aims to address severe traffic congestion that has long plagued this key arterial road connecting Hyderabad to its eastern outskirts.
Innovative Three-Tier Design for Maximum Efficiency
The proposed corridor will feature an innovative three-level structure designed to optimize traffic flow and urban transport integration. At ground level, service roads will facilitate local access, while the middle deck will carry main highway traffic. The top tier will be dedicated to a Metro rail line, creating a comprehensive multi-modal transportation solution.
Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy emphasized that this design represents a forward-thinking approach to urban infrastructure development, combining road and rail elements in a single structure to maximize space utilization and efficiency.
Substantial Investment and Strategic Benefits
With an estimated cost of Rs 941 crore, this project represents a significant investment in Hyderabad's transport infrastructure. The 5.5-kilometer corridor is expected to provide substantial relief from the frequent bottlenecks and delays that currently characterize this stretch of NH-65.
The project promises to benefit approximately 10 to 12 lakh residents living across 60-70 colonies in Hyderabad's eastern corridor. By improving connectivity and reducing travel times, it will enhance quality of life for a substantial portion of the city's population.
Addressing Safety Concerns and Infrastructure Gaps
One of the key motivations behind this project is addressing safety issues created by the current infrastructure limitations. The lack of proper crossing facilities has forced commuters to take detours exceeding 2 kilometers, creating both inconvenience and safety hazards.
The new corridor will provide dedicated pathways and improved access points, eliminating these dangerous detours and creating a safer transportation environment for all users.
Funding Model and Implementation Timeline
The project will follow a Centre-state funding model, with Rs 741 crore coming from central government sources and Rs 200 crore jointly contributed by the Telangana state government and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL).
Proposals were submitted to the Centre on March 17, and once approvals are secured, tenders will be floated to begin execution. This timeline suggests that construction could commence relatively soon, bringing much-needed relief to commuters.
Part of Broader Infrastructure Development Strategy
This double-decker corridor announcement comes alongside other significant infrastructure developments in the region. A Rs 545-crore project to widen the LB Nagar–Malkapur stretch of NH-65 into six lanes is nearing completion, while the state is also planning a 52-kilometer Mannanur–Srisailam elevated corridor.
Additionally, the government has undertaken Rs 20,000 crore worth of road projects under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), with 6,092 kilometers already completed in Phase-I. These initiatives collectively represent a comprehensive approach to improving Telangana's transportation network and supporting regional economic growth.
The LB Nagar–Hayatnagar double-decker corridor stands out as particularly innovative due to its multi-level design that integrates highway traffic with Metro rail infrastructure. This approach not only addresses immediate congestion problems but also creates a foundation for sustainable urban mobility that can accommodate future growth and development in Hyderabad's expanding eastern corridor.
